Laura Taylor of Mayville State (N.D.) has been named the NAIA National Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Taylor was selected based on her performances from Jan. 24 - 30 and was chosen out of a pool of conference /independent /unaffiliated groupings.
In the Comets’ 80-75 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) on Jan. 26, the 6-1 center poured in 24 points on 6-of-15 shooting and grabbed 18 boards. Eleven of her rebounds came on the offensive glass, leading to crucial second-chance points in Mayville State’s win. With only six active Comet players for the matchup against NCCAA’s Trinity Bible College (N.D.) on Jan. 29, Taylor stepped up big with 32 points, 24 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists.
The sophomore from Maddock, N.D., finished the week averaging 28 points and 21 rebounds per game, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the free-throw line.
Taylor has positioned herself among the Dakota Athletic Conference’s best, ranking first in offensive rebounds per game with 3.6, third in rebounds per game with 6.8 and seventh in scoring with 13.2 points per game.
