The North Dakota State men's basketball team will try to snap a three-game losing streak and gain momentum for the Summit League tournament when the seventh-place Bison (13-14, 7-10) host fifth-place South Dakota Dakota State in the regular-season finale for both teams at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Bison Sports Arena (5,830) in Fargo.
This is the 202nd meeting between North Dakota State and South Dakota State dating back to 1909-10. NDSU has won nine straight and 10 of the last 11 meetings to take a 108-93 lead in the series. SDSU's last win in the series was 67-65 in Brookings on Feb. 18, 2006.
North Dakota State won the first meeting this season 82-75 in Brookings on Dec. 4. TrayVonn Wright had 15 points and 15 rebounds off the bench in his best game as a Bison, and Eric Carlson added 14 points and 11 rebounds as NDSU snapped SDSU's seven-game winning streak to start the year. Nate Wolters had 36 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Jackrabbits.
The Jackrabbits are 18-10 overall and 10-7 in The Summit League after having a four-game winning streak snapped last Saturday with a 105-96 loss at Oakland. Sophomore guard Nate Wolters, the Summit League Player of the Week, ranks 40th nationally with 19.2 points per game and is 10th with 6.2 assists per game. Wolters ranks third in The Summit League in scoring with 20.5 points per league game. Clint Sargent is second on the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game and Jordan Dykstra is averaging 11.1 points and a team-high 5.1 rebounds for the Jacks, who rank second in the league-only stats in scoring offense (84.6 ppg) but eighth in scoring defense (74.8 ppg). SDSU, which has six players shooting at least 40 percent from the 3-point line, ranks fourth in the nation in 3-point shooting (.422) and sixth in 3-pointers made per game (9.2). The Jacks are also third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.57) and fewest turnovers per game (10.0), and ninth in turnover margin (+4.4). Scott Nagy (Delta State, 1988) has a 288-188 record in his 16th season as head coach at South Dakota State.
Friday's game will be the school-record 119th in the career of North Dakota State senior forward Michael Tveidt, who will pass the career mark of 118 games set by Mike Nelson, Brett Winkelman and Ben Woodside from 2005 to 2009. It will also be the 104th start of Tveidt's career, which will put him in a four-way tie for sixth all-time at NDSU with Nelson, Jeff Askew and Ben Nemmers.
North Dakota State seniors Freddy Coleman and Michael Tveidt will play their final home game Friday against South Dakota State. Coleman has averaged 4.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game over his 84-game career. Tveidt has averaged 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds over 118 games and enters Friday's game 10th all-time at NDSU shooting 39.1 percent from the 3-point arc.
