FARGO, N.D. – Five North Dakota State University
football players were voted to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team
announced Thursday, Nov. 6, by the College Sports Information Directors of
America.
Quarterback Carson Wentz, wide receiver Zach Vraa, center Jesse Hinz, outside linebacker Esley Thorton and defensive end Kyle Emanuel advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America® honors to be announced later this month.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
Wentz, a junior from Bismarck, N.D., has a 4.00 GPA in health and physical education. He has completed 133 of 209 passes with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions in his first year as NDSU’s starting quarterback. He is second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and 22nd in the FCS with a 63.6 completion percentage.
Vraa, a senior from Rosemount, Minn., has a 3.51 GPA in sports management. He leads the Bison with 28 catches for 379 yards and two touchdowns. He ranks fifth in NDSU career history for pass receptions (141) and receiving yards (2,189), and ranks fourth in touchdown receptions (21).
Hinz, a senior from Beatrice, Neb., has a 3.71 GPA in criminal justice and Spanish. He has made all nine starts for the MVFC’s top rushing attack, which ranks 10th nationally averaging 244.4 yards per game. The Bison also lead the league and rank eighth in the FCS in fewest sacks allowed (0.89 per game).
Thorton, a senior from Bismarck, N.D., has a 3.91 GPA in exercise science. He has made all nine starts and is NDSU’s sixth leading tackler with 36 stops. He is third on the Bison defense with 4.0 tackles for loss including 2.0 sacks, and also has one interception, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick.
Emanuel, a senior from Schuyler, Neb., has a 3.66 GPA in construction management. He is on the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in the FCS. Emanuel has 46 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles. He ranks third in the FCS with 12.5 sacks and is third in NDSU career history with 33 total sacks.
The Missouri Valley Football Conference claimed 12 of the 24 spots available on the Capital One Academic All-District 6 team in Division I. South Dakota State had six picks and Missouri State had one. The district includes Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
