UMC Women’s Basketball to Close Out Regular Season Home Games This Weekend

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday to host Upper Iowa and Winona State in the Golden Eagle’s final two home games of the 2010-11 season. Game times are set for 6:05 p.m. on Friday and 4:05 p.m. on Saturday and will be shown on Midco Sports Net (Channel 27 in Crookston).

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON – (11-11, 8-10 NSIC) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team hosted Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth this weekend in NSIC play. UMC went 1-1 in the double-header and finished the weekend in 10th place in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston defeated BSU 84-63 on Friday but fell to UMD 65-78 on Saturday. It was a historic first half for the Golden Eagles against the Bulldogs as two team members each reached career milestones. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) set the all-time Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball scoring mark of 1,642 points previously held by Karna Plaine (2002-2006). Zelinsky broke the record with a good jumper with one second remaining in the first half. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, Sr., Northfield, Minn.) scored her 1,000th career point in a Golden Eagle uniform with a basket at the 17:47 mark of the first half. Zabel has been with the Golden Eagles for three seasons after transferring from Florida Gulf Coast. Zelinsky led UMC offensively on the weekend averaging 17 points/game. She was 13-24 from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line. She finished second on the team with 11 rebounds and four assists and tied a team-high with four steals. Zabel averaged 12.5 points/game and finished with four assists.

UPPER IOWA- (1-21, 1-17 NSIC) The Peacocks welcomed the Warriors of Winona State to Dorman Gym for their lone matchup of the week on Saturday. Winona State owned the first half thanks to their effort on the offensive boards, and second opportunities, but Upper Iowa outplayed their guests in the second half to give themselves an opportunity for the win in the closing minutes. UIU shot 70% in the second half, but fell in the end by an 84-77 count. Upper Iowa was led by Lana Otting’s 18 points, but she was joined by four other Peacocks in double figures. The group included Cassandra Deiters (14), Jen Herrick (11), Heidi McKean (10) and Jeri Jacobson (10). Jacobson had a game-high 8 rebounds, while Deiters pulled in 7. UIU also tallied 24 assists on the night including 7 by Herrick and McKean, 5 by Jacobson, and 4 by Otting.

WINONA STATE- (16-6, 12-6 NSIC) Katie Wolff (G, 5-6, So., Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield HS) scored a career-high 24 points in WSU’s win over Upper Iowa Saturday night. She was 7-of-12 from the field and hit four 3-pointers. She was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Wolff also handed out four assists, blocked a shot and had three steals.
