UND Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013 announced

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison and UND Letterwinners Association President Karen Braaten announced today the UND Letterwinners Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013.
Jenny Crouse (Basketball, 1995-99), Greg Johnson (Hockey, 1989-93) and Carter Rogalla(Baseball, 1994-98) will be inducted as individuals, while the 1988-89 men’s swimming & diving team and the 1991 women’s cross country team will be inducted in the team category.

Additionally, former UND hockey standout and current University of Minnesota Duluth head coachScott Sandelin (1982-86) will receive the Tom Clifford Award, while longtime statistician Jim Schothorst will receive the Honorary Letterwinner Award.

“What an incredible class of Hall of Fame honorees we have this year, representing five different sports,” said Braaten, who lettered in tennis at UND in 1971 and 1972. “All of our athletic inductees had outstanding athletics records while at UND and have continued their success beyond their collegiate years. A statistician since 1979, Jim Schothorst has volunteered countless hours to our football and basketball programs and is most deserving of his award.”

The 39th annual Athletics Hall of Fame event will take place with a luncheon and induction ceremony on Sept. 14 prior to UND's Big Sky Conference football game against Montana. The Class of 2013 will also be recognized during halftime of the football game.

This year's three inductees bring the total number of individuals in UND's Letterwinners Athletics Hall of Fame to 237, while the two team inductees are the 33rd and 34th to be recognized.

Jenny Crouse (Basketball, 1995-99): Led North Dakota to three consecutive NCAA Division II championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999 … Two-time NCAA DII Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player (1998, 1999) … A first-team All-American as a senior and junior and a third-team All-American as a freshman … A two-time NCAA DII National Player of the Year (1997-98, 1998-99) … Four-time All-North Central Conference selection and the 1995-96 NCC Freshman of the Year … Remains UND’s all-time leader in career points (2,284), scoring average (18.0 ppg), rebounds (1,145), field goals made (924), field goals attempted (1,474), field goal percentage (.627), free throw attempts (588) and blocked shots (494) … Still holds single-season school records for field goal percentage (.684 in 1997-98) and blocked shots (152 in 1998-99) … Set UND’s freshman scoring record with 558 points in 1995-96, a record that still stands … Blocked a school-record 14 shots in a Feb. 8, 1997, win vs. St. Cloud State, and added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the first recorded triple-double in UND women’s basketball history … UND went 116-12 (.906) during her four years, including back-to-back 31-1 seasons in 1997-98 and 1999-99 … Named to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball 25th Anniversary Team in 2006 … Originally from Freeport, Ill.

Greg Johnson (Hockey, 1989-93): UND’s all-time scoring leader with 272 career points in 155 games, including a WCHA-record 198 assists … The only three-time Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist (1991, 1992, 1993) in UND history … A three-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 1991 and 1993 and second-team honors in 1992 … Named to three straight All-WCHA First Teams (1991-93) … Two-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection … Following college, spent two seasons with Canadian National Team … Won a gold medal with Canada at the 1991 World Junior Championship … Also represented Canada at the 1994 Winter Olympics … Went on to enjoy a 12-year National Hockey League career with Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Nashville … Served as team captain in Nashville for his final three seasons in the NHL … Finished his NHL career with 369 points (145 goals, 224 assists) in 785 games … Was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1989 draft … Brothers Corey (1992-96) and Ryan (1994-96) also played at UND … Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Carter Rogalla (Baseball, 1994-98): Graduated in 1998 as UND’s all-time leader in at-bats (586), runs scored (202), hits (201), doubles (37), triples (9), home runs (33), runs batted in (156), total bases (352) and walks (106) … Remains the school’s career leader in runs scored and walks … Ranks second all-time at UND with 63 career stolen bases … A two-time all-region selection (1996, 1998) … Also twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors (1997, 1998) … Named North Central Conference co-Player of the Year in 1998 … Two-time All-NCC First Team selection … Holds UND’s single-season records for RBI (65) and runs scored (64) … Also set UND single-season records for hits (68), doubles (15), triples (4), home runs (20) and total bases (143), all of which have since been broken … Helped lead UND to North Central Conference runner-up finishes in 1995 and 1998 … Originally from Thief River Falls, Minn.

1991 Women’s Cross Country Team: UND’s first women’s cross country team to qualify for the NCAA DII Championship, where it placed fifth … Two runners (Steph Bruening, Sheila Pexsa) were named DII All-Americans, the first in program history … Both were also named the first CCCA DII All-Academic honorees in program history … Bruening was also named a CoSIDA DII Academic All-American … Bruening and Louise Ronnerman were named all-region and All-North Central Conference … Head coach Dick Clay was named North Central Region Coach of the Year … Placed third at the North Central Region Championship … Ronnerman and Bruening are members of the UND Athletics Letterwinners Association Hall of Fame as individuals.

Tom Clifford Award
Scott Sandelin (Hockey, 1982-86): Has spent the past 12 seasons as head men’s hockey coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth … Has amassed a career coaching record of 231-229-63 (.502) and led the Bulldogs to a national championship in 2010-11 … Recipient of the 2003-04 Spencer Penrose Award as NCAA Division I men’s hockey coach of the year … Has coached two Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners and six All-Americans … Served as head coach of the United States at the 2004 IIHF World Championship … Spent six seasons on North Dakota coaching staff prior to being named head coach at UMD … Assistant coach on UND’s 1997 and 2000 national championship teams … Played at UND from 1982-86 and collected 93 points in 149 career games … Two-year team captain and was a second-team All-American as a senior.
The Tom Clifford Award was established to honor former UND President Thomas J. Clifford and his long-time support of UND Athletics. The award recognizes UND alumni who serve with distinction as athletic coaches at the high school or college levels.

Honorary Letterwinner Award
Jim Schothorst: Has spent the past 34 seasons as a statistician for UND Athletics home events … Joined the football stat crew in 1979 and added men’s and women’s basketball to his duties the following season … Served on the press box staff for the 1997 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Elite Eight and the 2005 NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Elite Eight, both of which were held in Grand Forks … Has also served as a volunteer statistician for multiple conference championships and NCAA postseason events.

The Letterwinners Association Honorary Award is given upon official action by the club's Executive Committee to persons who, in the opinion of the committee, have contributed significantly to the furtherance of UND Athletics.

NDSU Wrestlers Recognized by WWC for Academic Success

Ten North Dakota State wrestlers have been recognized by the Western Wrestling Conference for their academic success during the 2012-13 season, the league announced Wednesday. Four Bison were named to the WWC All-Academic Team, while six more claimed WWC Coaches’ Honor Roll status.

Trent Sprenkle, Evan Knutson, Steven Monk and John Gusewelle earned spots on the WWC All-Academic Team by securing a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average, being a starter or key reserve, and holding sophomore or higher academic standing.

NDSU matched Utah Valley and Wyoming to lead all conference squads with four student-athletes on the All-Academic Team.

Mark Erickson, Paul Johnson, Kallen Kleinschmidt, Caleb Meide, Mac Stoll and Hunter Weber claimed spots on the WWC Coaches’ Honor Roll with cumulative grade point averages above 3.0.

NDSU was also recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) in May for having the 11th-best team GPA in the nation at 3.129, marking the second straight year that the Bison came in at No. 11 nationally. Sprenkle and Knutson were named to the NWCA All-Academic Team as well.

MN State Boys' and Girls' Track and Field Meet

Twenty-two individual champions and representatives from 10 relay teams that won gold medals last year have qualified to defend those titles this Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, when high school athletes gather at Hamline University in St. Paul for the 2013 State Track and Field Meet.
Preliminaries in track events for both classes will be conducted on Friday, as well as a few finals. All of the 3,200-meter run events will be finals only on Friday, as will be some field events. Friday’s schedule begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Class AA competition. The Class A events are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., but possibly may start later depending on the pace of the Class AA meet. The same schedule will be followed on Saturday.
Class A Girls Highlights

Clare Flanagan, a junior at The Blake School of Minneapolis, is looking for her second consecutive title in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. She also has the fastest qualifying time in both events: 4:50.54 in the 1600 and 10:38.74 in the 3200.
Sommer Haugrud, a Pelican Rapids senior, will defend her 200-meter dash title. Senior Kaija Crowe of Milaca owns the fastest qualifying time of 26.04.

Senior Katie Shepardson of La Crescent returns in search of more gold in the 800-meter run. Cannon Falls junior Emi Trost owns the best qualifying time of 2:13.47.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Staples-Motley junior Jaelin Beachy will race for a second consecutive title. Carolyn Nye, a sophomore at The Blake School, has the best qualifying time of 15.42. Nye also returns to defend her own title in the pole vault. She set a new Class A record of 11-07.00 at the 2012 state meet and qualified with the best vault of 11-08.00 this year.

Junior Carlie Wagner of New Richland-H-E-G returns for a second shot at the high jump title. She will face tough competition from Caledonia/Spring Grove senior Emma Lange who qualified with the best jump of 5-04.00.

Junior Danielle Wubben of Central Minnesota Christian of Prinsburg is the final returning champion. She is seeking her second consecutive title in the long jump. Junior Jada Carr of Russell- Tyler-Ruthton holds the best qualifying distance of 17-08.50.

The Osakis Silverstreaks return to defend their titles in both the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay races. Chatfield has the best qualifying time of 1:46.32 in the 4x200 and Blue Earth Area owns the fastest qualifying time of 4:00.32 in the 4x400. Osakis is also angling to upset the defending champions from Byron in the 4x100 race. The Silverstreaks enter with the best qualifying time of 50.55.

Watertown-Mayer is the final returning relay team. The Royals are looking for their second consecutive title in the 4x800 and come in with the fastest qualifying time of 9:44.97.

Class A Boys Highlights

Michael Whitney, a senior at Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah, returns to defend his titles in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Sophomore CJ Moise Damey of Prairie Seeds Academy of Brooklyn Park has the fastest qualifying time of 10.97 in the 100, and junior Tyler Beehler of Foley owns t he best qualifying time of 22.19 in the 200.

Junior Jason Montonye of Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley is looking for his second consecutive title in the 800-meter run and senior Charlie Lawrence of Foley is searching for more gold in the 3200-meter run. Neither owns the best qualifying time in their respective event; Waseca sophomore Shane Streich qualified in the 800 at 1:57.58 and Rochester Lourdes junior Mike Torchia qualified in the 3200 at 9:38.23.

Senior Grant Krieger of The Blake School of Minneapolis and senior Steffan Stroh of Ottertail Central are the final returning individuals. Krieger is looking for his second consecutive title in the pole vault while Stroh is in the hunt for his second consecutive crown in the discus. Tyler Tappe, a junior at Pequot Lakes, has the highest qualifying vault of 15-03.00. Senior Dustin Gill of LeSueur-Henderson has the best qualifying throw of 160-01 in the discus.

Madelia/Truman’s 4x800-meter relay team returns for more gold. Its qualifying time of 8:15.24 is more than nine seconds slower than the top qualifying time of 8:06.08 belonging to Cotter of Winona.
Class AA Girls Highlights

The Class AA girls field is well represented with previous title holders. Defending champions in eight individual events return and representatives from three medal-winning relay teams will be competing.

Senior Taylor Anderson of Hopkins, who set the All-Time State Meet record of 11.71 last year, returns to defend her title in the 100-meter dash. Wensia Johnson, a ninth-grader from Alexandria, has the fastest qualifying time of 12.03.

Junior Megan Linder of Cretin-Derham Hall of St. Paul returns in search of more gold in the 400-meter dash. She also owns this year’s best qualifying time of 56.46.

Titles in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs may belong to Shakopee senior Maria Hauger, having won both last year, but she does not have the best qualifying time in either event this year. St. Michael-Albertville sophomore Rachel King qualified with the best time of 5:03.71 in the 1600, and Eagan senior Danielle Anderson qualified with the fastest time 10:46.76 in the 3200.

Meleah Biermaier, a ninth-grader from Thief River Falls, returns to defend her title in the 300-meter hurdles with the fastest qualifying time of 43.71.

Eden Prairie senior Taylor Johnson qualified to defend her triple jump title, but was more than two feet off the best qualifying jump of 38-09.25, which belongs to Minnetonka junior Mia Barron.

Maggie Ewen, a senior at St. Francis, is the final returning individual. She is looking for her fourth consecutive discus title and her third consecutive shot put title. Ewen set the All-Time State Meet record of 171-09 in the discus last year and she owns the best qualifying distance of 158-07 this year. Her qualifying put of 47-02.00 is also the best in the shot put competition.

The Hopkins Royals are looking for their third consecutive title in the 4x100-meter relay. Last year’s team of Judaisha Roach-Jackson, Taylor Anderson, Dami Manuel-Moore and Elise Anderson set a new All-Time State Meet record of 47.73. The Royals enter this year’s meet with the best qualifying time of 48.58.

The defending champion Minnetonka Skippers return a relay team to both the 4x400- and 4x800-meter events. The Skippers also own the fastest qualifying time in each event -- 3:57.08 in the 4x400 and 9:22.39 in the 4x800.

Class AA Boys Highlights

Many new champions will emerge, with only two relays and one individual qualifying to defend 2012 titles.

Senior Nathan Roese of East Ridge of Woodbury will defend his 400-meter dash title. Junior Michael Smith of Wayzata has the fastest qualifying time of 48.52.

The 4x200-meter relay team from North of North St. Paul is looking to defend its 2012 title. Last year’s squad of Andy Giovinazzo, Quentin Mann, Akeem Sirleaf and Travis Griffin set a new All-Time State Meet record of 1:27.23. Wayzata owns this year’s best qualifying time of 1:26.96.

Wayzata returns in search of a second consecutive gold medal in the 4x400-meter relay, but East Ridge boasts the fastest qualifying time of 3:20.74.

NDSU Captures Summit League Women’s All-Sports Award

ELMHURST, Ill. – North Dakota State University claimed The Summit League’s Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award for the fourth consecutive year, the league office announced Tuesday, June 4.

The Bison won their fourth straight Dr. Helen Smiley Award after placing first in women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field, women’s golf, softball and women’s outdoor track & field. NDSU also won the men’s outdoor track & field title and placed in the top-two in seven of its 14 eligible championships.

With a total of 94.5 points, South Dakota State captured its second Commissioner’s Cup in the last three years following the completion of the 2012-13 academic year. The Jackrabbits also earned their first Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award.

North Dakota State, last season’s Commissioner’s Cup recipient, took second with 87.0 points. The next three positions were separated by one point each with South Dakota (78.5) taking third followed by Oakland (77.5) and Kansas City (76.5). Western Illinois finished sixth with 65.5 points, while newcomer Omaha (64.0), Fort Wayne (59.5) and IUPUI (58.0) rounded out the standings.

The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men’s sports and women’s sports. The men’s award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women’s award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU’s athletic program from 1994-2001.
