Three Lynx Players Make 2012 U.S. Olympic Roster

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - USA Basketball today announced that Lynx players Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen were among 11 players named to the final 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team. This is the fourth consecutive Olympic year in which the Lynx have been represented on the final Olympic roster, with Augustus (2008) and Katie Smith (2000, 2004) previously donning the red, white and blue. One roster spot remains open for the eventual U.S. squad and will be filled by the National Team Player Selection Committee at a later date.

"We are extremely proud of Seimone, Maya and Lindsay for having the distinct opportunity to represent their country in the Olympics," said Lynx Executive Vice President Roger Griffith. “Each of these women is incredibly talented and we look forward to seeing them play in front of the entire world this summer. We wish them the best in their quest for gold this summer.”

After winning the gold medal with Team USA in 2008, Seimone Augustus (6-1, guard/forward) is looking to repeat the success in London this year. She helped Team USA sweep their way through the Olympics in 2008, averaging 7.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in eight games.

She averaged 18.3 minutes during the competition, averaging 8.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Whalen (5-9, guard) is also making her first trip to the Olympics as a part of Team USA. A teammate of Moore’s on the 2010 USA World Championship Team, Whalen averaged 5.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 18.4 minutes off the bench during the competition. She scored a team-high 16 points to help lead the USA to victory in the second round over Canada.

WCHA Honors

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota’s Brad Eidsness was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Most Outstanding Student-Athlete and Ben Blood and Brock Nelson were selected to the All-WCHA Third Team, highlighting the league’s awards announced earlier today.

Additionally, 11 Fighting Sioux were named to the All-WCHA Academic Team.

Eidsness, a senior goalie, is the second straight Sioux and the fifth in the history of the program to receive the WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award, joining Chay Genoway (2010-11), Karl Goehring (2000-01), Mitch Vig (1997-98) and Steve Johnson (1987-88).

A native of Chestermere, Alberta, Eidsness completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration following his junior season and will receive his master’s degree in business administration in May. Last year, Eidsness received the 2011 NCAA Elite 88 Award for men’s hockey at the NCAA Frozen Four for owning the highest grade point average among all participants at the championship. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.779 cumulative grade point average as an undergraduate and boasts a 3.625 cumulative GPA in graduate school.

On the ice this season, Eidsness finished second in the WCHA during league games in goals against average (2.19) and save percentage (.919), while going 6-3-1. Overall this season, Eidsness is 7-3-1 with a 2.09 GAA and a .923 save percentage while moving into third place on UND’s career wins list (57).

Blood, a senior defenseman, has appeared in all 35 games this season and has amassed a career-high 17 points, with both of his goals counting as game-winners. A native of Plymouth, Minn., Blood averages approximately nearly 30 minutes of ice time per game and has appeared in 135 consecutive games, having not missed a game since his freshman season.

Nelson, a sophomore forward, led all WCHA players with 20 goals during league play and is tied for the league’s overall goal-scoring lead with 23. The Warroad, Minn., native, UND’s youngest 20-goal scorer since Jonathan Toews in 2005-06, leads the Sioux in game-winning goals (4), is tied for the team lead in power-play goals (9) and ranks second with a career-high 39 points.

Eidsness, Blood and Nelson were also among UND’s 11 All-WCHA Academic Team selections, with Eidsness and Blood joining Mario Lamoureux (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Tate Maris (Jr., Denver, Colo.) as three-time selections.

UND’s other All-WCHA honorees included two-time selections Andrew MacWilliam (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) and Carter Rowney (Jr., Sexsmith, Alberta), as well as first-time recipients Nelson, Taylor Dickin (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba), Derek Forbort (So., Duluth, Minn.), Derek Rodwell (So., Taber, Alberta) and Dillon Simpson (So., Edmonton, Alberta).

Roebuck earns second Great West Coach of the Year honor

In addition, redshirt freshman center Emily Evers received the Great West Conference Sixth Woman Award and three Sioux were named all-conference.

This is the second time in three years that Roebuck, who led the Fighting Sioux to the 2011-12 GWC regular-season title with a league record of 9-1, has received the Great West’s top coaching honor. He received the league’s inaugural award in 2009-10 after the Sioux captured the first GWC championship. Now a 12-time coach of the year, this is Roebuck’s 25th and final season at the helm of the Sioux. He currently holds a phenomenal record of 712-158 overall and a 626-144 mark at North Dakota.

A native of Grand Forks, N.D., Evers is the second Sioux to receive the GWC Sixth Woman Award (Alys Seay, 2009-10) after averaging 6.4 ppg and 4.6 rpg off of the bench. A member of the 2011-12 GWC All-Newcomer Team, Evers is the only player on the UND roster to have played in and scored in each of the 29 games this season.

A two-time Great West Conference Player of the Week, a two-time College Sports Madness GWC Player of the Week, and the 2011-12 Great West Conference Preseason Player of the Year, sophomore center Allyssa Wall was named to the All-Great West Conference First Team. Wall, a North Sioux City, S.D., native ranks second in the league averaging 14.4 ppg and is averaging 7.6 rpg. She is shooting 51.3 percent from the field, 84.8 percent from the free throw line, and has posted an average of 1.6 bpg.

Earning a spot on this year’s All-Great West Conference Second Team was senior guard Charnay Mothershed and junior captain Nicole Smart.

State Boys’ Hockey Tournament

(via mshsl) In the sixth year of seeding the qualified teams, Hermantown was chosen No. 1 in Class A and Duluth East was chosen No. 1 in Class AA for the 2012 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament.

The Hawks of Hermantown qualified for the ninth time and are seeking their second state title. The Greyhounds of Duluth East are making their 19th trip to the tournament and are seeking their fourth state title.

All but one qualifying team has past tournament experience. Maple Grove is making its inaugural appearance. Hill-Murray of Maplewood leads all teams by making its 25th appearance this year.

Class A teams will play their quarterfinal games on Wednesday, March 7, and Class AA teams will follow suit on Thursday, March 8. Both classes will continue with championship semifinals on Friday, March 9, and then third-place and championship games on Saturday, March 10. Consolation semifinals for Class A are scheduled Thursday, March 8, with Class AA following suit on Friday, March 9, and both consolation championship games on Saturday, March 10. All 2012 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament championship-round and third-place games in both classes will be played at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. All consolation rounds for both classes will be played at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus.

The seeding process had the 16 coaches of the section champions log onto a special page of the League Web site. Each coach then ranked the other teams one through seven. The highest and lowest rankings for each team were discarded, leaving five rankings for each team. From those rankings, the top four seeds were selected. In conference calls with all eight head coaches of each class, League Associate Director Craig Perry announced the top four seeds. An impartial participant then blindly drew the four remaining teams from a hat to establish the opponent for each seeded team.

Detailed statistics provided by qualified teams are available on the League’s Web site — www.MSHSL.org — as a Media Guide link under Tournaments, then Winter, then Boys’ Hockey.
