North Star Conference Announces Weekly Football Awards

The North Star Football Conference has announced the Players of the Week awards for the third week.

In the West Division, Chase Zeller from Lake Park-Audubon earned Offensive Player of the Week, Colton Laymon from Warren-Alvarado-Oslo garnered Defensive Player of the Week and Tyler Wacker from Frazee earned the Special Teams Player of the Week award.

For the East Division, Matt Doss from Pillager was named Offensive Player of the Week and Derek Sonenstahl from Pine River-Backus earned Defensive Player of the Week.

Chase Zeller, a senior, carried the ball 28 times for 225 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. LP-A was trainling in the game 29-6 when Chase ran the ball for 3 touchdowns and 170 yards in a little over 7 minutes of play. LP-A defeated Frazee, 36-29, on the back ofZeller’s performance.

Junior, Colton Laymon, led the way for the W-A-O team with his defensive effort. Laymon had 4 solo tackles, 2 assists with 1 forced fumble and 2 fumble recoveries. Turnovers were the difference for W-A-O’s victory over Red Lake County and Colton was a big part of 3 of the 5 turnovers the Ponies recovered.

Tyler Wacker, a junior, had some outstanding plays on special teams for the Frazee Hornets during their hard fought game against Lake Park-Audubon. Tyler is a young player who has had to step up and play defense as well as be the number 1 field goal kicker all year. Tyler went 3 for 3 on extra points during the game.

Senior, Matthew Doss, led Pillager to a victory over Bagley last Friday evening. Matt completed 14 of 22 passes for 256 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 38-24 win over the previously unbeaten Flyers.

Derek Sonenstahl led the Pine River defense in their victory over Cass lake-Bena. The senior recorded 6 solo tackles and 6 assisted tackles for the game.

Other outstanding performances for last week were turned in by: Zach Riopelle (Warren- Alvarado-Oslo), Tate Moser (Fertile-Beltrami), Dan Janu (Frazee), Jacob Hedstrom (Mahnomen), Cody Piper (Frazee), Nathan Holm (Pine River-Backus), Kris Skersick (Bagley), and Lucas Thompson (Bagley).
Currently, Pine River-Backus leads the East Division with a 3-0 record and there is a log jam at the top of the West Division with Fertile-Beltrami, Mahnomen and Warren- Alvarado-Oslo all with 3-0 starts.
