FARGO,
N.D. - After an exciting opening week of college football that resulted
in losses for eight of the top 10 teams in the Football Championship
Subdivision, four-time defending champion North Dakota State checked in
at No. 2 in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and the FCS Coaches Poll released
Monday, Sept. 7.
North Dakota State, coming off a 38-35 loss at then 12th-ranked Montana, captured 6 of 23 first-place votes in the FCS Coaches Poll and garnered 22 of 144 first-place votes in the STATS FCS Top 25 media poll. The Bison open their home schedule against unranked Weber State this week.
Coastal Carolina jumped from fifth to first in the FCS Coaches Poll after a 38-35 road win over unranked Furman. Sam Houston State moved from third to first in the STATS FCS Top 25 after a 59-45 loss at Texas Tech. Jacksonville State, the only other Top 10 team to win, advanced to fifth in the coaches poll and sixth in the STATS poll after a 23-20 win over another Top 10 team, Chattanooga.
Seven teams received first-place votes in the FCS Coaches Poll and 10 teams got the top nod from voters in the STATS FCS Top 25.
Montana is the only team in the FCS with two games under its belt. The Grizzlies lost 20-19 at home to unranked fellow Big Sky member Cal Poly in a non-conference game, but the Griz still climbed to eighth in both polls thanks to their win over the previously No. 1 Bison.
South Dakota State moved into the Top 10 in both polls after hanging on for its first FBS win at Kansas, 41-38. The Missouri Valley Football Conference has six teams ranked in both polls - NDSU, Illinois State, SDSU, Northern Iowa, Youngstown State and Indiana State.
