UND Student Athletes named Senior CLASS Award All-Americans

BOSTON – University of North Dakota seniors Mark MacMillan and Nick Mattson have both been named 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award All-Americans in NCAA Division I men’s hockey. MacMillan earned first-team honors while Mattson was named to the second team. Both had been among the 10 national finalists for the 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award, which was given to Colgate’s Spiro Goulakos.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive difference as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

MacMillan, a forward from Penticton, British Columbia, is an entrepreneurship major with a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average. He was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Defensive Forward of the Year and earned All-NCHC First Team honors after scoring a career-high 16 goals in a season ended prematurely due to injury. One of UND’s most active student-athletes in the community, MacMillan played a lead role in UND’s 2013-14 North Dakota Strong campaign that raised more than $33,000 for cancer research. It was the largest charitable fundraiser ever initiated and executed by the UND Athletics Department. MacMillan is also a national finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Mattson, a defenseman from Chanhassen, Minn., is a management major with a 3.922 cumulative grade point average. In 32 games this season, Mattson ranks ninth among NCHC defensemen with 20 points and is a career-best plus-11. He is UND’s leading scorer since the Christmas break, registering three goals and 13 assists in 22 games in that time. Mattson has given more than 50 hours of community service during his four years at UND including, but not limited to, Special Olympics, North Dakota State Fair, Grand Forks Public Library and more. On Wednesday evening, Mattson received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for the second straight year.

MacMillan and Mattson are UND’s first Senior CLASS Award All-Americans since Chay Genoway in 2010-11.
