Mayville State's Lundon Wins NSAA Women's BB Player of the Weed



ADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) has selected Jenna Lundon of Mayville State (N.D.) for this week's Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week honor, the ninth installment of the weekly honor was announced Monday by the conference office.

Jenna Lundon – Mayville State (N.D.) – 5'6" – Junior – Guard – Waubon, N.D. – Lundon – who leads the NAIA Division II in 3-pointers made per game – poured in 21 points in 83-28 Mayville State's (N.D.) home victory over Trinity Bible (N.D.). She went 7-of-11 from the field and drained six 3-pointers in 10 attempts.  Lundon also earned four rebounds and dished out three assists in the game.  She recorded a steal.

Lundon named NSAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) announced its eleventh edition of the Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week honor Monday.  Mayville State University women's basketball player Jenna Lundon was selected to this week's honor.  Jenna Lundon is a 5'6" – Junior Guard from Waubun, Minn. Lundon helped the Comets gather two NSAA conference victories on the road as they defeated Presentation and Dakota State, both games decided by three points. She scored 33 points at Presentation on 9-for-16 shooting, with 8-of-14 coming from the 3-point line, and 7-of-8 free-throws. She had five rebounds and three assists. Lundon added 17 points at Dakota State on her 5-of-10 field goals, all from the 3-point line, and made both free-throw attempts. She recorded two rebounds and three steals. For the week, Lundon averaged 25.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals. She was 14-of-26 from the field (53.8 percent), 13-of-24 from the 3-point line (54.2 percent), and converted 9 free-throws in 10 attempts.

Scott Berry wins coaching award

(Kansas City, MO) – The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has selected Mayville State University (Mayville, ND) Head Coach Scott Berry as the recipient of the 2011 Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award. Berry will receive his award during the FCA Baseball Breakfast held Saturday, January 7 at the American Baseball Coaches Convention in Anaheim, CA.

Berry has led Mayville State University’s baseball program since 1982. In his 30 years as head coach, Berry has accumulated an impressive 826-478 career record, which places him among the top winningest coaches in NAIA baseball. Berry’s teams are a dominant presence in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) by winning 21 conference championships, 18 conference playoff championships and tallied 21 appearances in the NAIA national playoffs.

Coach Berry has also accumulated several personal awards and recognitions. He has been inducted into four Hall of Fames, including: Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), NAIA Hall of Fame for Baseball (2002), North Dakota Amateur Baseball Association Hall of Fame (2003), and the Christian Sports Commission Hall of Fame (2009). He’s also tallied 11 different NAIA District 12 Coach of the Year honors and 19 conference coach of the year awards, been awarded the NAIA Great Plains and Region 3 Coach of the Year, received the North Dakota Associated Press Sportswriters and Sportscasters “Special Achievement Award,” and the NAIA Robert E. Smith Achievement Award among many others.

“I have known Scott personally for over 25 years and can readily testify that he is an exceptional godly man,” said FCA Baseball Leadership Board Chairman, Dave Altopp, adding that “his faith was never more clearly demonstrated than during his wife’s recent losing battle with cancer.” One of Scott’s former players, Mark Andresen, wrote in his letter of recommendation for the Kindall Award that “Coach Berry has touched the lives of numerous people and continues to be a ‘rock’ even as he struggles with the realities of life.” Andresen further commented that in “losing the love of his life, Coach Berry relied on his faith, his immediate family, and his baseball family to help provide support in dealing with this loss.” His immediate family includes a daughter and three sons, all of whom have played for him at Mayville State.

A native of LaMoure, N.D., Berry played college baseball for the Mayville State Comets under legendary coach Al Meyer. After graduating he went on to coach teams in Ellendale, Binford, Rolla and Casselton (ND) before returning to Mayville in 1981 as Coach Meyer’s assistant. He then took the program’s helm in 1982.


Named after Jerry Kindall, former major league player and retired head coach at the University of Arizona, the Character in Coaching Award is presented annually to the college or high school baseball coach who best exemplifies the Christian principles of Character, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork and Service on and off the baseball field. Coach Kindall was the honorary first recipient of the award at the 2006 FCA Baseball Breakfast.

W-A-O standout Danny Mattson to play for Comets men's basketball team

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo High School basketball standout Danny Mattson will continue his basketball career at Mayville State University next season, head coach Justin Johnson announced today.

Mattson was a two-time All-Conference selection at W-A-O and was honored as an All-State performer following his senior season.

"Danny will have an incredible future at Mayville State University," Johnson said. "He has a lot of tools to work with and will get even better throughout his career here at MSU. We are extremely fortunate to have such a quality young man in our program."

Mattson averaged 22.4 points per game during his senior season and pulled down 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 39 percent from behind the three-point line.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to play at Mayville State University and I hope I can help keep their winning tradition going," Mattson said.

Along with his success on the court, Mattson was also named to the Academic All-State team in Minnesota.

Mayville State softball coach resigns

Mayville State University athletic director Mike Moore announced on Wednesday that Melissa Majerus has resigned as head softball coach.

Majerus had served as the head softball coach over the past three seasons at Mayville State, compiling a record of 40-94 from 2009 through 2011. This season the Comets finished with an overall record of 11-29 while finishing fifth in the Dakota Athletic Conference with a 7-13 conference record.

"We thank Coach Majerus for her service here at Mayville State and we wish her the best," Moore said.

A search for a replacement will begin immediately.

Cody Aasness to play men’s basketball at Mayville State University

The Mayville State University men's basketball program is pleased to announce that Cody Aasness has signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Mayville State University next season.

Aasness, a 6-0 guard from Dalton, Minnesota, played two seasons at MSCTC-Fergus Falls following an outstanding high school career at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

In his two seasons at MSCTC-Fergus Falls, Aasness helped lead the team to two state tournament berths and two 20-win seasons. As a freshman Aasness led the team with 3.2 assists per game as the Spartans finished with a 20-10 overall record. During his sophomore season Aasness was a team captain while the Spartans finished with a 20-8 record.

"I am really looking forward to having Cody in our program," Mayville State men's basketball coach Justin Johnson said. "He has a presence on the floor that we really need on our team and brings a tenacity to the game that the people of Mayville will enjoy a great deal."

During his high school career, Aasness was an All-Conference, All-Section, and All-State selection for Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. As a senior, Aasness averaged 21.7 points per game while leading his team t o the section championship.

"I am very excited to sign with Mayville State," Aasness said. "I look forward to playing for Coach Johnson and helping the Comets get back to their strong winning tradition."

Derek Schlieve named head football coach at Mayville State University

Mayville State University announced on Thursday that Derek Schlieve will take over as head coach of the Comets football program effective immediately.

Schlieve was the defensive coordinator at Mayville State University over the past three seasons and served as the interim head coach this spring following the resignation of former coach Nathan Chin.

“I am very excited to be the head football coach at Mayville State University,” Schlieve said. “I think that most people view being the head coach at their alma mater to be the best job possible and I absolutely agree. I would like to thank the coaches that were here before me that helped to make this possible. I would also like to thank the alums that showed their support for me, I will work hard to show them how much this means to me and to build a program that we can all be happy with.”

Prior to being named the defensive coordinator at Mayville State, Schlieve was the offensive coordinator at Beulah Public Schools (ND). He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Wahpeton Public Schools (ND). After one year at Wahpeton he was named defensive coordinator at Pillager Public Schools (MN). Following a one-year stint as defensive coordinator at Pillager, he was named the head coach and remained there for three seasons. In September of 2005 Schlieve was named the State of Minnesota football coach of the week. After being a head high school coach for three seasons he returned to Mayville State to coach the defensive line in the spring of 2007.

Schlieve earned his undergraduate degree in education at Mayville State University with a major in elementary education and a minor in coaching, graduating magna cum laude, in 2002. He earned his graduate degree in sports management from St. Cloud State University, also graduating magna cum laude, in 2007.

A four-year letter winner in college, Schlieve was twice named Academic All Conference (DAC-10) and once named Academic All American (NAIA). He also played in the National All Star Bowl at the linebacker position in Minneapolis, Minnesota after his senior season.

Coach Schlieve resides in Mayville with his wife Cora and his sons Camdyn & Xavier.

Laura Taylor NAIA Div II WBB Player of the Week

Laura Taylor of Mayville State (N.D.) has been named the NAIA National Division II Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Taylor was selected based on her performances from Jan. 24 - 30 and was chosen out of a pool of conference /independent /unaffiliated groupings.

In the Comets’ 80-75 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) on Jan. 26, the 6-1 center poured in 24 points on 6-of-15 shooting and grabbed 18 boards. Eleven of her rebounds came on the offensive glass, leading to crucial second-chance points in Mayville State’s win. With only six active Comet players for the matchup against NCCAA’s Trinity Bible College (N.D.) on Jan. 29, Taylor stepped up big with 32 points, 24 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and two assists.

The sophomore from Maddock, N.D., finished the week averaging 28 points and 21 rebounds per game, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 76 percent from the free-throw line.

Taylor has positioned herself among the Dakota Athletic Conference’s best, ranking first in offensive rebounds per game with 3.6, third in rebounds per game with 6.8 and seventh in scoring with 13.2 points per game.
