Simpson named NCHC Defenseman of the Week
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota senior captain Dillon Simpson has been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Defenseman of the Week for his play in North Dakota’s series split against No. 20 Minnesota Duluth last weekend.

Simpson registered four points – three of them coming on the power play – and blocked three shots in the series. The Edmonton, Alberta, native matched his career high with two assists in Friday’s 4-2 win, including an assist on Jordan Schmaltz’s game-winning goal midway through the period. The following night in a 6-3 loss, Simpson scored a power-play goal and added an assist on Bryn Chyzyk’s third-period goal.

In 10 games this season, Simpson leads UND’s defensemen with six points on a goal and five assists. All six of his points having come during NCHC play, ranking him second among the league’s defensemen. His five assists during league play top all NCHC defensemen.

Simpson was a fourth-round draft pick (92nd overall) of his hometown Edmonton Oilers in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

St. Cloud State senior forward Cory Thorson was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week, Minnesota Duluth forward Alex Iafallo was named NCHC Rookie of the Week, and Denver senior Sam Brittain was named NCHC Goaltender of the Week.
