2017 MN State HS Clay Target League Trap Shooting Championship

Alexandria, MN – The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MNSHSCTL) is proud to announce that 7,459 student athletes are scheduled to participate in the 2017 Trap Shooting Championship, June 12-20 at the Alexandria Shooting Park in Alexandria, Minnesota.  For nine days, student athletes representing 304 Minnesota high school teams will compete for individual and team achievements in Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity classifications.

“Just six years ago the Championship took just one day for 200 athletes” said Jim Sable, Executive Director of the MNSHSCTL. “Now over 25,000 students, parents, coaches, and spectators are drawn to Alexandria for nine days. It’s amazing to think that in just a few years the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Trap Shooting Championship has become the largest shooting event in the world.”

The 2017 Trap Shooting Championship is also the team-qualifying event for the 2017 Clay Target State Tournament presented by the Minnesota State High School League.  In addition to the students who had the top 100 averages during the regular season competition, 40 teams will qualify at the Trap Shooting Championship to compete for the ultimate recognition as MSHSL State Champions on June 24, 2017 at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota. The Minnesota State High School League was the first and is the only state high school interscholastic athletic association in America to provide support and recognition for a high school trap shooting state tournament.

Generous supporters for the Trap Shooting Championship include: Alexandria Industries, Alexandria Technical & Community College, Army, Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Ted & Angie Erickson, HybridLight, Joe’s Sporting Goods, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Mark Zauhar, National Wild Turkey Federation, Outdoor News, Pihl-Neiderman Family, Runnings, Sportsman’s Guide, and Walker’s. Over 60 exhibitors will be in attendance offering many outdoor products and services.

This year more than 11,000 student athletes representing 343 high school teams participated in the 2017 spring season. They were coached and supported by over 3,000 volunteers.

The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League is an affiliate of the USA High School Clay Target League, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The League is an independent provider of shooting sports as an extracurricular co-ed and adaptive activity for high schools and students in grades 6 through 12. The organization’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship – in that order. Each student is required to pass a comprehensive firearm safety education course prior to participation.

Nationwide, over 20,000 student athletes representing over 600 school-approved teams participated in the League during the 2016-17 school year.
