MCAC and USA High School Clay Target League Form Partnership

MINNESOTA  –  The Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) has teamed up with the League to offer a  new sanctioned varsity sport - Clay Target - to begin in Fall 2018.

Trap shooting is the shooting sport of choice for the MCAC’s Clay Target offering, in which a team of 5 take turns shooting at clay targets traveling at over 40mph. Students will compete ‘virtually’ by shooting at their local shooting range and uploading their scores to the League for tracking.

Clay Target is fully Title IX compliant with both male and female athletes competing on the same team. Additionally it’s an ‘adaptive’ sport, which allows students with physical disabilities to take part.

The League is assisting the MCAC to craft the Clay Target Sports Code to help form the program, and will provide leadership, administration, and interactive support. A 6-week fall season will start in late-August and conclude with the MCAC Clay Target Championship in mid-October.

As a part of their status as a varsity sport within the Conference, participating Minnesota College Athletic Conference colleges will require student athletes to complete a minimum number of enrollment credits and meet GPA standards to participate on a team.

“With the success of the USAHSCTL, we have always envisioned the League growing to provide shooting sport programs for colleges,” said League Vice-President John Nelson. “Our partnership with the MCAC is just the first of an exciting new path of post-secondary education and activity opportunities for graduating high school student athletes that have enjoyed the Clay Target League for so many years.”

MCAC Executive Director Peter Watkins notes that Clay Target offers a chance to engage a new population for the athletic departments of colleges. “It allows schools to expand their ‘brand’ and school pride to a whole new population in and around their communities.” Watkins said. “Clay Target student athletes and their families are connecting with the school, buying sweatshirts, coming onto campus more often, and learning about the education options at the colleges, much like we see in other sport populations.”

The USA High School Clay Target League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the independent provider of shooting sports as an extracurricular co-ed and adaptive activity for high schools and students in grades 6 through 12. The organization’s priorities are safety, fun, and marksmanship – in that order. Nationwide, nearly 22,000 student athletes representing over 800 school-approved teams participate in the League.

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference is comprised of over 20 public, two-year Community and Technical Colleges across the state of Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, and is committed to providing an engaging and supportive environment for success of our student athletes and competition among member institutions.

MN High School Clay Target League

Minneapolis, MN – 11,936 student participants from 349 high school teams are participating in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League's (MNSHSCTL) 2018 spring season, which began April 1st. Those are the highest participation numbers ever for the state, according to League officials.
“This League continues to be one of the largest high school sports in the state of Minnesota,” said Jim Sable, President of the MNSHSCTL, “Such high participation shows the continued demand for alternative high school activities related to Minnesota's longstanding outdoor traditions."
The League's co-ed and adaptive nature are key attractions to high schools in Minnesota. The League is fully Title IX compliant with both male and female athletes competing on the same team. Additionally, it's an 'adaptive' sport, which allows students with physical disabilities to take part.
Upon completion of the Spring League’s regular season, all student athletes are invited to participate in individual and team competitions at the 2018 MNSHSCTL Trap Shooting Championship. The event - the world's largest shooting sport event with about 8,000 competitors expected - is scheduled for June 11th-19th at the Alexandria Shooting Park, while the Skeet Championship will be held at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake June 20th-21st.
The trap shooting season culminates with the State Tournament presented by the Minnesota State High School League on June 22nd in Prior Lake. The State Tournament provides the opportunity for the highest qualifying individuals and teams from the MNSHSCTL to compete for the ultimate recognition as Minnesota State High School League State Champions. The Minnesota State High School League was the first state high school interscholastic athletic association in the United States to provide support and recognition for a high school trap shooting state tournament.
The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League attracts student athletes that have earned their firearm safety certification to participate in shooting sports while creating a "virtual" competition among high school teams throughout Minnesota at no cost to the schools. Family travel costs are minimal because practice and competition are conducted at a shooting range near the school's location. The League is also the safest sport in high school, with no reported injuries since the inception of the League in 2001.

Conferences are determined by team size rather than geographic location for fair competition. Athletes earn True Team® scoring points as determined by their performance and ranking against all athlete scores within their team’s conference. The team score and overall standings are calculated and posted on the League's website. Athletes and their families may track their individual and team performance on their computer via the League's website, and by the Shooter Performance Tracker® mobile app.

MN State High School Clay Target League Fall Season

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – 3,099 student athletes representing 130 high school shooting sport teams are competing for six weeks this fall in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League. The organization’s fall season began on September 17th and will conclude on October 28th.
“Fall League participation continues to grow,” Jim Sable, Executive Director of the MNSHSCTL, said. “This year's increase in participation is a reflection of the tremendous success of our spring offering, in which over 11,000 student athletes representing 343 teams participated.”
According to MNSHSCTL Vice President John Nelson, the growth of the league is continuing. “We’ve already had a number of new teams form over the summer for the 2018 spring season and that will continue until March 1. Along with the expansion of existing teams, we expect to see over 13,000 student athletes participating this spring in Minnesota’s fastest-growing and safest high school sport.” Since its founding in 2001, the MNSHSCTL has no reported injuries.
The MNSHSCTL Fall League offering is open to high school teams that competed in the 2017 Spring League. The fall competition is 3 weeks shorter than the in the spring, and there is no final tournament to end the season. “The Fall League is a way for high schools to continue offering clay target shooting as an activity for those students that don't participate in other fall sports.” Nelson said. “Providing a safe and fun outdoor activity for students keeps them involved in school, and can help improve overall classroom engagement.”
