The North Star Football Conference has announced it initial Players of the Week for the East and West Divisions. The West Division won six of seven crossover games with Pine River-Backus defeating Fosston (39-0) for the lone East Division victory. In other games, Frazee won at Bagley (37-7), Blackduck lost to Fertile-Beltrami (30-46), Cass Lake-Bena was defeated by Warren-Alvarado-Oslo (7-28), Lake of the Woods was upended by Red Lake County (6-36), Walker-Hackensack-Akeley fell to Lake Park-Audubon (13-46) and Pillager lost to Mahnomen (6-46).
East Division
Offensive Player of the Week - Beau Howard (Pine River-Backus). The senior quarterback completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Howard had no interceptions and added 63 yards rushing on 6 attempts and one touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week – Christopher Zimmer (Walker-Hackensack-Akeley). The linebacker had 10 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle and 1 sack.
West Division
Offensive Player of the Week – Mason Swegarden (Lake Park-Audubon). The quarterback was 8 for 11 for 191 yards and 1 touchdown. Swegarden also added 5 rushing touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week – Zach Nelson (Frazee). Zach had 2 interceptions, including 1 that he returned for a touchdown.
Special Teams Player – Tyler Wacker (Frazee) was 4 for 5 with extra point kicks and he added a 24 yard field goal.
Additional outstanding performances during week one include: Jared Adkins (Pine River-Backus, Defense), Sam Gibson (Warren-Alvarado-Oslo, Offense), Bruce Lemon (Frazee, Offense) Bob Bjorge (Mahnomen, Offense), and Darin Geray (Mahnomen, Special Teams).
