Nicole Smart named GWC Player of the week

For the second time this season, North Dakota senior guard Nicole Smart has been named the Great West Conference Player of the Week, as announced by league offices today. She nabbed conference honors after leading the Fighting Sioux to a pair of Great West victories last week in Texas. Those wins helped to lead the Sioux to their second GWC regular-season title in three years.

Just yesterday, Smart was named the College Sports Madness Great West Conference Player of the Week.

A native of Ada, Minn., Smart averaged 16.5 ppg last week in the Lone Star State.

In the 60-58 victory at Texas-Pan American on Thursday, she led the squad with a career-high 19 points, and was clutch down the stretch. With 54 seconds left in the game, Smart sank her only three-pointer of the night. She then drained a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left on the clock, extending UND’s lead to four. She finished 5-for-12 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

On Saturday against Houston Baptist, she finished with a team-high 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field, including a pair of three-pointers in each half. Inside UND’s 14-6 first-half-ending run, Smart swished a pair of baseline three’s, including one to end the half. Inside the four-minute mark of the second half, she drilled back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give UND a 22-point advantage.

Others nominated: Devyn Weymouth (Houston Baptist), Nicole Maticka (NJIT), Bianca Torre (Texas-Pan American) and Sammie Jensen (Utah Valley).
