We've got it started!

The 2014-15 school year is off and running!  With that comes so much room for activities throughout the area!  Sometimes it's hard to fit it all in by attending, and that's what we are here for.

Four stations to keep you covered throughout the sports season and we're definitely in full swing here at R&J Broadcasting, Inc.  The season officially began for us on the radio/webcast on Monday, August 25th on 96.7 FM KKCQ when the one and only, Tom Lano made the road trip to Blackduck, where the Drakes hosted the Clearbrook/Gonvick Bears in the first volleyball match of the year.  Since that point, we have aired close to twenty games between KKCQ-FM & AM, KRJM & KRJB Radio.  We're not even two full weeks into the fall season yet...

You know what that means:  Lots and lots of games remain for us to broadcast and we hope to have you joining us for the broadcast!   Even if you're at the games, bring your ear buds and tune in while the action is going on in front of you.  See how close we are as broadcasters when it comes to who's making the play and how things are unraveling right in front of our eyes!

I personally have been in attendance at a few games now, one volleyball match on the 26th in Climax, where Climax/Fisher hosted Norman County West - an interesting match up and good play we saw on both sides for a first match.  Several players that came back with not much varsity experience, but honestly, you wouldn't have thought that by watching the match.  From eight graders, freshmen and up to the senior leaders on the teams, both squads made it a fun first night of volleyball for the airwaves of Gold 101.5 FM KRJM.  I was very impressed!

The following Thursday another interesting scenario that was held in Waubun as the Bombers opened up their 2014 campaign against the Clearbrook/Gonvick Bears in football action - it was parents' night to kick off the season.  Not only at the first game, but school had not even started yet.  Not that that is a big deal, but it was surely something different I had not seen broadcasting games for 10+ years now.
No matter the time of year, whether its preseason, regular season or the off season, parents play a crucial role in the development of these student athletes and they sacrifice a lot of time, miles and money to make sure each player is accounted for this season and for their future endeavors.  So they truly are much deserving of the recognition known as parents' night each season!

Not only did I get to experience the first football of the year Thursday, August 28th in Waubun that the Bombers were able to score a shut out to start the year off on the right track defeating the Bears 18-0, but at half time we were entertained with a bucket of ice water that was dumped on one of the custodians, the dean of students & principal at the school.  I don't think they dumped enough water on Tim Spaeth, honestly, so they should probably just do that at every game.  Pre-game, halftime AND post-game!

The pole got in the way, but you get the drift of what's going on here...
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Waubun style!

So far from two Clarks (Paul & Bomber) to another; Friday, August 29th finished our week of games for Week 1 in Pine River, MN where the Pine River/Backus Tigers played host to the Mahnomen Indians to kick off their respective seasons in 2014.
For a team we didn't know much about, nor did the Mahnomen coaching staff or players, I was pretty impressed by the Tigers.  They set up in many different offensive sets and mixed it up both passing and rushing throughout the night with some good athletes they had in the skill positions.  Along with that, some big boys up front!
It may have started out a little bit slower for the Indians than they would have liked, but with some younger players who were making their very first varsity start of their careers, that is probably to be expected.  They slowly started to gel together throughout the night and break some big plays, including a nifty-shifty punt return/Dance Dance Revolution by Dylan Reitan.  I supposed he gets good practice showing off those moves while his dad rocks the guitar & mic.

Leading up to the finish of the game, following many hard hits, nice blocks, big runs and some nice toss & catch for some big gains and/or points on the board, Mahnomen prevailed to keep the longest winning streak in the state of Minnesota alive (29 in a row now).

Tune in for more exciting volleyball & football action with R&J Sports this week!  Don't forget to catch the Coaches Corner program every Saturday morning at 9:00am on KRJB/KRJM plus the KKCQ Coaches Corner each Wednesday evening at 6:00pm.  All of the area coaches talking about the week that was, the upcoming schedule and much more, plus we do our picking of the pros each show (Go Chiefs!!).  Join us for that by logging on to www.rjbroadcasting.com and go to the Sports Schedule & Scores section of the Sports tab at the top - same place you can find this blog you're reading right now!

Until next time, good luck to all of the area teams and have a great school year!
