NDSU remains #1 in FCS coaches poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –North Dakota State remained No. 1 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll after topping FBS Colorado State Saturday. The Bison received 24 out of 26 first-place votes and 648 out of a possible 650 points.
NDSU defeated the Rams 22-7 in the Bison’s first road game of the season. North Dakota State dominated time of possession against Colorado State by nearly 20 minutes and outgained the Rams by 123 yards. Junior quarterback Brock Jensen was efficient all evening, completing 17 of 28 passes for 178 yards. NDSU now has six wins over FBS schools since 2006 -- the most among all FCS schools. The Bison are 6-3 against FBS opponents over that stretch.
Sam Houston State maintained its No. 2 spot, tallying 625 points and two first-place votes, after defeating Incarnate Word 54-7 in t he Bearkats’ first game of the 2012 season.
Montana State (No. 3), Old Dominion (No. 4), and James Madison (No. 5) each moved up one spot after starting the season 2-0. Northern Iowa won its first contest of 2012, a 59-0 victory over Central State, and climbed one spot to No. 6.
Appalachian State also moved up one spot to No. 7 after defeating then-No. 9 Montana, which dropped to No. 12. Youngstown State jumped two spots to No. 8 after defeating Valparaiso 59-0, while Wofford won its first home game of 2012 and moved up to No. 9.
Georgia Southern fell to No. 10 after the Eagles dropped a 23-21 decision at The Citadel on Saturday. The previously unranked Bulldogs entered the Top-25 at No. 23 this week.
Ten conferences are represented in the poll. The Colonial Athletic Association leads the way with six teams, followed by the Southern Conference and Missouri Valley with four ranked teams. The Southland and Big Sky have three teams in the Top 25. The Patriot League, Ivy League, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Ohio Valley and Big South are all represented with one team in this week’s poll.
The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
