Malik Smith Signs Tender to Play at Minnesota

The Minnesota men’s basketball program announced today that Malik Smith has signed a tender to play for the Gophers. Smith will be eligible immediately pending an NCAA waiver based on a possible APR induced post-season ban at Florida International University, his previous school.

Smith joins previously signed guards Deandre Mathieu and Daquan McNeil as part of head coach Richard Pitino’s inaugural recruiting class at Minnesota.

“I was a pleasure to coach Malik last season at FIU and I am excited that he has decided to join the Golden Gopher program,” said head coach Richard Pitino. “His knowledge of our program on and off the court will be invaluable as we start to integrate our system here at Minnesota.”

Smith comes to the University of Minnesota after playing his junior season for Coach Pitino at FIU. He started 31 of 32 games for the Golden Panthers and was named Third Team All-Sun Belt Conference after averaging 14.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. His 451 points scored last season are the eighth-most in the history of Florida International basketball.

Smith set an FIU record for three-point field goals made in a single season with 96 treys and ranked number one in the conference and 16th nationally with an average of 3.0 three-pointers made per game. He set the Sun Belt Conference Tournament record with 15 total three-pointers made, including an 8-for-10 game in the opening round against Arkansas-Little Rock.

Prior to his junior season at FIU, Smith played his sophomore season at Jacksonville College and his freshman season at South Plains College. He averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game at Jacksonville, earning all-region and all-conference honors. Smith played 27 games as a freshman and averaged 5.0 points per game.

Smith, a native of Boston, Mass., led the State of Massachusetts in scoring as a senior while at Madison Park High School in Boston with an average of 26.6 points per game. He went on to play one season at Notre Dame Prep, where he averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

North Dakota announces 2013-14 incoming freshman class

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North head men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol announced today that eight incoming freshmen will join the program for the 2013-14 season.

North Dakota’s incoming class includes: defensemen Gage Ausmus of East Grand Forks; Paul LaDue of Grand Forks; Keaton Thompson of Devil’s Lake, ND; and Troy Stecher (STETCH-ur) of Richmond, B.C.; forwards Luke Johnson of Grand Forks; Wade Murphy of Victoria, B.C; and Adam Tambellini of Edmonton, Alberta; and; goaltender Matt Hrynkiw (huh-RINK-you) of Saskatoon, Sask.

UND places four on CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Teams

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota student-athletes Jocelyne Lamoureux, Monique Lamoureux, Veronica Medon and Nick Mattson have been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Jocelyne Lamoureux and Medon both earned their second straight selections, while Monique Lamoureux and Mattson are each first-time honorees.

North Dakota’s four total selections were topped by only two other Division I institutions in the entire nation: the U.S. Naval Academy and Alabama. Penn State and West Virginia were the only other DI schools with four selections.

Additionally, UND was one of only five DI institutions with three selections on a single women’s academic all-district at-large team, joining the U.S. Naval Academy, Alabama, North Carolina and Penn State.

The team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for athletic and academic performance in the following sports: Women's Bowling, Women's Crew, Men's and Women's Fencing, Women's Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Ice Hockey, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Rifle, Men's and Women's Skiing, Men's and Women's Swimming, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Water Polo, Men's Wrestling.

Jocelyne Lamoureux, an Academic All-American last season as a junior, was a first-team All-American and a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award in 2012-13 after ranking third in the national scoring race with 81 points (35g, 46a) in 39 games. She was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row and graduated as the WCHA’s all-time leading scorer with 285 points in 149 career games. The Grand Forks, N.D., native is currently pursuing her master’s degree in kinesiology and owns a 4.0 grade point average.

Monique Lamoureux, a senior from Grand Forks, N.D., earned first-team All-America honors after leading the nation’s defensemen and ranking eighth among all players with 65 points (26g, 39a) in 39 games. She received UND’s Grace Rhonemus Female Athlete of the Year Award (all sports) and graduated as the second-leading scorer in the history of the WCHA with 265 points in 149 career games. A graduate student with a 4.0 GPA, Lamoureux is currently pursuing her master’s degree in kinesiology.

Both Lamoureuxs also helped lead the United States to a gold medal at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship.

Medon, a senior from Huntsville, Ontario, broke three of her own school records (200 back, 100 back, 200 IM) at the 2012-13 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship, recording NCAA “B”-cut standards in both backstroke events. A team captain who was voted the team’s most valuable swimmer, Medon also helped UND place third in the 200 free relay at the WAC Championship. Medon, a 2013 Academic All-WAC selection, is majoring in psychology with a criminal justice minor and boasts a 4.0 GPA.

Mattson, a sophomore defenseman from Chanhassen, Minn., collected 15 points (3g, 12a) in 38 games to go with a career-high +9 plus/minus rating. He received the WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award and was named to the All-WCHA Academic Team, while helping lead UND to the program’s 11^th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, the longest active streak in NCAA Division I men’s hockey. Mattson is a pre-entrepreneurship major with a 4.0 GPA.

All four student-athletes advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-Americans will be selected later this month.

12 UMC Student-Athletes Earn NSIC Spring All-Academic Honors

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston had 12 student-athletes named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Spring All-Academic teams as announced by the conference office Wednesday.

The UMC baseball team had two student-athletes honored as Jesse Jennings (So., IF/OF, Robbinsdale, Minn.) and Jordan Prill (Sr., 1B/OF/P, Melrose, Minn.) received the honor. Four softball players received recognition as Shelby Hollinger (So., IF/OF, Neudorf, Saskatchewan), Stacey Marcum (Sr., P, Merrill, Wis.), Josee Plante (So., 3B/C, Manitou, Manitoba) and Brooke Vatthauer (So., P/1B, Crookston, Minn.) were honored. UMC men’s golfers Jesse Roscoe (So., Big Stone City, S.D.) and Zach Cymbaluk (So., Crookston, Minn.) also received recognition as did Golden Eagle women’s golfers Kelly Gustafson (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.), Kari Bodine (Sr., Babbitt, Minn.) and Mary Mikutowski (So., Stillwater, Minn.) and women’s tennis netter Casey Paris (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.).

To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Furthermore, the athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her/his institution (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at that institution.

Joe Coleman Granted Release from Gopher Hoops Program

University of Minnesota men’s basketball head coach Richard Pitino and the Golden Gopher basketball program today announced that guard Joe Coleman has asked for, and will be granted release from his scholarship.

“Joe Coleman has made the decision to leave the Golden Gopher basketball program. We wish him the very best in the future,” said Pitino. “We appreciate the contributions he has given the program the last two years.”

Coleman played in 72 career games in Maroon and Gold, including all 34 games last season. He contributed career-highs in multiple categories as a sophomore, including points (8.7 ppg), rebounds (3.6 rpg), assists (1.5 apg), steals (1.1 spg) and minutes played (26.3 mpg). He will leave the program with career averages of 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds.

NDSU Women's Track & Field ranked 11th in Midwest Region

Following its sixth consecutive Summit League outdoor championship and 12th straight league title overall, the North Dakota State women’s track & field team has been ranked 11th in the Midwest region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Bison women have seven performances that rank among the top eight in the Midwest region for the 2013 outdoor season.

NDSU is the highest ranked team from The Summit League in the weekly regional ranking system. The USTFCCCA uses performances on the national descending order lists to calculate where teams stack up against the competition regionally.

The Midwest Region includes all Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Junior hurdler Deborah John owns the third-fastest 100m hurdles time in the Midwest at 13.53 seconds, and Ashley Tingelstad (400m) and Leslie Brost (pole vault) are both sixth in the region.

Junior Emily Lesser is seventh in the Midwest in the hammer throw, and Antoinette Goodman ranks eighth in the 200m dash.

Both NDSU relays are among the best in the region, with the 4x100m team of John, Brittany Page, Tingelstad and Goodman ranked sixth, and the 4x400m team of Tingelstad, Paige Stratioti, Page and Melissa Kitching standing at seventh on the Midwest performance list.

Qualifiers to the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Rounds held in Austin, Texas, on May 23-25 will be announced on Thursday. The Bison are expected to send at least 10 women to the meet.

Daniella Irle promoted to UND’s Deputy Director of Athletics

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Athletics Director Brian Faison announced today the elevation of Daniella Irle from Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations to Deputy Director of Athletics. She will continue to also serve as Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for UND Athletics.

“Daniella's tremendous organizational skills, her leadership, and her incredible work ethic have been instrumental in aiding the successful transition process to full Division I membership, in advancing the enhancement of our student-athlete support services, and in working with our various conference partners,” said Faison. “This promotion recognizes those efforts, her expanding responsibilities and the important role she will continue to play for the department.”

Irle (pronounced ‘earl’) has served as senior associate athletics director for internal operations and senior woman administrator since June 2010. She previously served at UND as associate athletics director for internal operations and senior woman administrator since August 2008.

Her day-to-day duties include departmental oversight of the compliance office, athletics academic services, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, Title IX policy and compliance, the summer school athletics aid and degree completion aid programs, and direct supervision of various sports assigned by the athletics director.

Irle also serves as the department’s senior staff liaison with various campus entities such as Human Resources, the Office of Admissions, the Housing Office, the Dean of Student's office, the Student Success Center, the Office of the Registrar, the Student Financial Aid Office, University Police, the Emergency Management Office, and the University Counseling Center. She is also UND’s primary liaison for sport and scheduling regulations with the Big Sky Conference, Western Athletics Conference (WAC) and the America Sky Golf Conference.

Irle came to UND from Tulane University, where she was the assistant athletics director for business and student services operations.

Prior to that appointment, Irle spent three seasons as the head coach of the Tulane women's swimming and diving team, restarting the program after a 13-year hiatus. She was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

Irle also spent 10 years as the Fresno State swimming and diving coach. She was the WAC Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1995.

Other stops for Irle have included the University of Texas and LSU.

NDSU Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach Jason Kemp Resigns

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State University head men’s basketball coach Saul Phillips announced Tuesday, May 7, that assistant coach Jason Kemp has resigned to pursue further opportunities in coaching.

Kemp had been a part of the Bison men’s basketball coaching staff for eight years, starting as a graduate assistant in 2005 and serving six seasons as an assistant coach from 2007-13.

“Jason’s contributions in his eight years at North Dakota State have been immeasurable,” said Phillips. “The work he’s done on the court and behind the scenes has earned him a chance at a new opportunity. Jason has an unbelievably bright future ahead of him, and he will always be a friend to the NDSU athletic department and the people in it.”

The NDSU basketball four-coach staff had remained unchanged since the start of the 2007-08 season.

“My eight years at North Dakota State have been a privilege that I will treasure forever,” said Kemp. “Under the direction of Saul Phillips and Gene Taylor, this program has reached unprecedented heights, and I have enjoyed being a part of something so special. Our players’ hard work and dedication have allowed me a new opportunity, and I can’t thank them enough.”

NDSU posted a 24-10 record for the 2012-13 season, advancing to the championship game of the Summit League tournament. The Bison went 108-77 for a .584 winning percentage in Kemp’s tenure as an assistant coach.
