UMC Football Signs 32 on Signing Day for 2017

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston football program announced the addition of 32 student-athletes for the 2017 season. The class includes 31 high school signees and one junior college transfer.

“We feel really good about what we were able to bring in with this signing class,” Fritze said. “We had an emphasis on four-year players as we look to continue to build this program and we feel like we found guys that will help to continue to build our foundation.”

Coach Mike Fritze’s fourth recruiting class as head coach at UMC is highlighted by 20 players from the Midwest Region. The Golden Eagles found success north of the border as they went into Manitoba and signed four players. In addition, they inked six players from Minnesota, six from Wisconsin, two from South Dakota and two from North Dakota.

“We always focus on the region and we were able to find success in our normal recruiting territories of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin,” Fritze said. “Maybe the best thing about our class though is the balance we found in positions. We are still short a little bit in the offensive line and we would like to bring in a couple of more guys there and a kicker, but other than that we really filled a lot of needs today.

We did have a good spread of location for our signees this season, as well. It was a good thing for us to get into the Winnipeg area. Coach (Mark) Dufner did a great job up there for us. We got some really good talent from there, which isn’t always easy because of the differences in the value of the dollar.”

UMC was able to find success outside of the region. UMC signed 12 out of region players who will add to the talent of the program. The Golden Eagles found a lot of success in Arizona, where they had success two years ago with the signing of Bubba Cook. The Golden Eagles inked seven players from the Grand Canyon State. UMC also signed a quarterback and wide receiver pair from California and one junior college player who also signed last year before ending up at Northland Community and Technical College.

“Coach (Levi) Bullerman did a great job getting into Arizona and finding success down there and we also were able to bring in two players from California that could help us immediately. In Texas, we bring in a guy in Dez Henderson, who we signed last year, and then we bring in a talented linebacker from Florida in Michael Smart.”

The 32 signees will add to the 63 players currently on the University of Minnesota Crookston football roster, giving the Golden Eagles 95 players scheduled to be ready to go for Fall Camp in August.

The Golden Eagles also were able to bring in great balance in their recruiting class as they signed 15 defensive players and 17 offensive players.

The student-athletes listed today as having signed National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission to play at University of Minnesota, Crookston have been verified by the UMC Compliance Office once they sign the National Letter of Intent or once the student-athlete has accepted an Offer of Admission from UMC.

Minnesota Crookston will look to build on an already young roster as they supplement a core of talented youth. The Golden Eagles are looking to improve on a 0-11 mark. The Golden Eagles will be led by returning All-NSIC players Adam Connette (Sr., WR, Corona, Calif.) and Will Cross (R-So., LB, Turtle Lake, Wis.). Cross was a breakout player in 2016 and led the Golden Eagles with 90 tackles. Connette notched 72 receptions for 760 yards and five touchdowns. He became the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, surpassing UMC greats Mark Olsonawski and Carl Aho.

The Golden Eagles will continue to be led by Mark Dufner on defense as he returns for his 16th season on staff and fifth season as Defensive Coordinator. Fritze returns for his fifth season as head coach and is slated to take over play calling duties on the offensive side of the ball. Dave Volk, who is in his third season on staff, will be the run game coordinator. Recruiting Coordinator Levi Bullerman, safeties coach Tom Miller and corners coach and special team coordinator Sam Smith also return to the fray.

UMC will open up the 2017 season Thurs., Aug. 31 in a night game at Ed Widseth Field against Upper Iowa University.
