After helping lead the Gopher men’s basketball team to a
pair of victories last week, guard Amir Coffey has been selected the Big Ten
Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Coffey previously won the
award on Nov. 21.
Coffey led the team in scoring in both victories at
Northwestern on Thursday and at home against Ohio State Sunday night. Against
the Wildcats, the Hopkins, Minn., native scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting,
including a career-high three 3-pointers. He added four rebounds, three
assists, two steals and a block in the 70-66 victory in Evanston.
In Sunday’s 78-68 win over the Buckeyes, Coffey poured in 19
points on 7-for-11 shooting, adding five assists and four rebounds in 34
minutes of action.
Coffey is the Gophers’ second leading scorer, averaging 12.8
points per game, while ranking second in steals (20) and third in assists (47)
among the 15-2 Gophers. In Minnesota’s four Big Ten games, Coffey is averaging
15.2 points on 51.2 percent field goal shooting, and has scored in
double-digits in three of the last four games. Coffey is the Big Ten’s
second-leading freshman scorer.
He is the second Gopher to win the Freshman of the Week
award twice in one season, as Jordan Murphy did so last year on Dec. 7 and Dec.
22.
Coffey and the Gophers return to action on Wednesday night,
traveling to Michigan State for a 6:00 p.m. rematch with the Spartans.
