Dave Hakstol named finalist for Spencer Penrose Award

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota head coach Dave Hakstol has been named one of eight finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year.

It is the sixth time in his seven seasons at UND that Hakstol has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award. He was also a finalist in each of his first five years behind the Fighting Sioux bench.

This season, Hakstol has guided the Sioux (32-8-3) to one of the finest seasons in the storied history of the program. The top-ranked team in the nation, UND clinched an appearance in the 2011 NCAA Frozen Four with a 6-1 win over Denver last Saturday in the NCAA Midwest Region championship game. It is UND’s fifth Frozen Four appearance in Hakstol’s seven seasons.

Earlier this month, Hakstol and the Sioux won their second consecutive Broadmoor Trophy as Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) champions, becoming the league’s first team to repeat since 2004. UND also captured the MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular season champion for the second time in three years.

Several of Hakstol’s players have enjoyed standout performances in 2010-11. Senior forward Matt Frattin, who leads the NCAA with 36 goals and the WCHA with 60 points, is one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player, and was named the WCHA Player of the Year.

Frattin, senior defenseman Chay Genoway, and sophomore goalie Aaron Dell were each named to the All-WCHA First Team, while junior forward Jason Gregoire was an All-WCHA Third Team selection. Genoway was also named the WCHA’s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, and is a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

In the classroom, a school-record Fighting Sioux were named to the WCHA All-Academic team, and five were named WCHA Scholar-Athletes. Genoway became just the third player, and second men’s player, in league history to be named a four-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete.

The other finalists for the 2010-11 Spencer Penrose Award include Michigan’s Red Berenson, Nebraska Omaha’s Dean Blais, Notre Dame’s Jeff Jackson, Union’s Nate Leaman, Holy Cross’ Paul Pearl, Minnesota Duluth’s Scott Sandelin and Boston College’s Jerry York. The nominees represent any coach who won or shared Coach of the Year honors in his conference this past season, along with coaches whose teams have advanced to the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey semifinals.

Hakstol is bidding to become the third different Sioux coach to win the Spencer Penrose Award. Blais (1997, 2001) and John “Gino” Gasparini (1987) were UND’s previous recipients.

The winner will be announced following the NCAA Frozen Four scheduled for April 7 and 9 in St. Paul, Minn.

State Basketball Tournament Halftime Tribute to Honor Heroes Who Saved Student Athlete

A special halftime tribute at the Minnesota State High School League Boys’ Basketball Tournament will honor the heroes who saved Zach Gabbard, a Perham High School basketball player who suffered sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) during a game on Jan. 20, 2011. Members of Zach’s family and friends will be in attendance.

The tribute will be held on Friday, March 25 during halftime of the 6:00 p.m. Class AA semifinal game at Target Center.

• Steve Gabbard, Zach’s father, will tell the emotional story of his son collapsing and why CPR and AED training programs are critical to saving lives.

• Denise Cuchna, RN, who was one of the first bystanders to respond after Zach collapsed, performing CPR and using an AED to help revive him.

• Jody Redman and Joan Mellor, co-creators of the MSHSL’s Anyone Can Save a Life program, which are critical to creating “heart safe” schools—covering everything from recognizing the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest to helping prevent potential SCA attacks, to the latest in CPR and AED education, including development of emergency response plans. In fact, it is because of the Anyone Can Save a Life program that Zach’s lifesaving AED was placed in the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School where he collapsed.

• Craig Anderson, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School athletic and activities director, who was responsible for placing an AED in the school through the Anyone Can Save a Life program, ultimately saving Zach’s life.

The Anyone Can Save a Life program is an emergency response program for after-school practices and events. With this program, schools are equipped and prepared to respond to life-threatening emergencies that may take place during after-school athletic and activity practices and events. www.anyonecansavealife.org

The HeartRescue Project’s goal is to improve how Sudden Cardiac Arrest is recognized, treated and measured on a larger scale. This Medtronic Foundation-funded project expands SCA community response systems by coordinating education, training and the application of high-tech treatments among the public, first responders, emergency medical services (EMS) and hospitals. www.heartrescueproject.com

SCA is the leading killer of young athletes. The people who responded to Zach’s SCA helped him beat the odds, as the overall nationwide survival rate is only 8 percent. Fortunately, as Zach’s story shows, SCA is treatable with a quick and effective community-driven response.

NDSU Names Shari Robertson Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach

FARGO, N.D. - Shari Robertson, head coach the past three seasons at Upper Iowa, has been named assistant women's volleyball coach at North Dakota State. NDSU head coach Kari Thompson made the announcement Tuesday.

"Shari's experiences as a player, head coach and administrator will benefit our program immensely," said Thompson. "From a recruiting standpoint, she is very familiar with the players in our region and will help expand our recruiting footprint into Iowa."

Robertson had a 36-59 record at Upper Iowa, where she inherited a program that went 4-26 before her arrival and went 16-18 in her second season. She also served as assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator during her time as head coach.

"I'm very impressed with the people of North Dakota State University and their commitment to excellence," Robertson said. "I am honored to join the NDSU volleyball program and be part of their continued success."

Robertson was a middle blocker for Loyola Chicago on four straight Horizon League championship teams from 1999 to 2002 and was part of back-to-back NCAA tournament teams her first two seasons. She was named all-conference, all-Midwest Region, team MVP, and was named Loyola's Female Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2002.

Robertson was a graduate assistant for volleyball and strength training at Loras College in Iowa for two seasons from 2003 to 2005 before moving to Upper Iowa as an administrative assistant and director of athletic recruiting for one year.

Robertson graduated magna cum laude from Loyola in May 2003 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing, and she earned a master's degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration from Loras in May 2006.

North Dakota State was 20-11 overall and won a share of its third straight Summit League championship with a 14-4 record last year. The Bison lost to 12th-ranked Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was NDSU's second tournament appearance in three years.
