NDSU Projected as Summit League Softball Preseason Favorite


ELMHURST, Ill. -- North Dakota State University was selected as The Summit League preseason softball favorites in a poll of the league's seven head coaches released on Thursday, Feb. 2. The Bison won their third consecutive league tournament title in 2016.


NDSU collected six first-place votes for a total of 36 points. Omaha was selected second with 27 points while Western Illinois placed third with 25 points. South Dakota had 23 points for fourth place, followed by South Dakota State (19 points), IUPUI (11 points) and Fort Wayne (5 points).

The Bison, who have won the last three Summit League tournament championships and five consecutive regular season crowns, return a league-high six all-league selections from last season, including pitcher of the year Jacquelyn Sertic. A native of Sparks, Nev., Sertic led the league in wins (24), earned run average (2.26) and strikeouts (216) in 2016.

North Dakota State opens the 2017 season Feb. 10-12 at the Cal State Fullerton Easton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif.
