UMC's Cleary Named 2017-18 D2CAA All-Central Region First Team



ST. PAUL, Minn. – University of Minnesota Crookston sophomore men’s basketball player Harrison Cleary (G, Oak Creek, Wis.) named named D2CAA All-Central Region First Team as announced Mon., March 12. Cleary becomes the first player since Joe Hasz following the 2002-03 season to represent Minnesota Crookston on an All-Region team.

Cleary joined Minot State University’s Tyler Rudolph as the only two NSIC players on the D2CAA All-Central Region First Team. Justin Pitts of Northwest Minnesota State University was named D2CAA Central Region Player of the Year. Ryan Bruggeman of Southwest Minnesota State University, Gage Davis of St. Cloud State University and Ian Smith of Northern State University represented the NSIC on the D2CAA All-Central Region Second Team.

Cleary was an All-NSIC First Team selection, also the first since Hasz since the 2002-03 season. He was the first back-to-back All-Conference honoree since Hasz. Cleary led the NSIC with 24.2 points per game. He was sixth in all of NCAA Division II for scoring. In addition, Cleary led the league by shooting 96.0 percent (143-of-149) from the charity stripe. Cleary was sixth in the NSIC for three-point shooting percentage at 47.0 percent. He was second in all of NCAA Division II for free throw shooting. Cleary tallied a school-record 702 points on the 2017-18 season. The sophomore has scored an astounding 1,342 points in just two seasons at Minnesota Crookston. Cleary needs just 597 points to move past Joe Hasz for No. 1 all-time in scoring for the Golden Eagles. Cleary has also scored 1,022 points in NSIC play, which is Top 30 all-time in the NSIC. He notched 19 games with 20 or more points, including a school-record 46 points against Minnesota State University. In addition, he tallied double-figure scoring 28 or 29 games on the season.

Cleary moves on to the D2CAA All-American ballot. The national teams will be announced Mon., March 19.

MN State Girls’ Basketball Tournament Preview


(via mshsl) BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. --- The State Girls’ Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 14-17 at various venues in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Quarterfinals will be played at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis and at Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. All championship rounds will be played at Target Center and all consolation rounds and third-place games will be played at Concordia University in St. Paul. Here is a look at the tournament:

The Quarterfinal Match-ups
Class A
               Heritage Christian Academy, Maple Grove vs. Lyle/Pacelli: The Eagles of Heritage Christian Academy are making their debut state tournament appearance. Taylie Scott is the team’s top scorer with 16.0 points per game, while Jordyn Allen averages a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game. Lyle/Pacelli returns to tournament play for a second time. As a team, the Athletics average a 49.6 field goal percentage.
               Menahga vs. Minneota: 2018 marks the first-ever tournament appearance for the Menahga Braves. Cierra Ahlf leads the Braves with 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Minneota is a seven-time tournament participant and a 2013 champion. Lydia Sussner averages a double-double for the Vikings with 18.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
               Stephen-Argyle Central vs. Mountain Iron-Buhl: Stephen-Argyle Central is making its second tournament appearance. Autumn Thompson leads the Storm in scoring with 17.9 points per game; Abi McGlynn averages 6.4 rebounds per game. The 2017 runner-up team from Mountain Iron-Buhl returns for an eighth consecutive and ninth overall appearance. The Rangers get 25.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game from Mary Burke, who also leads the team in assists and steals.
                Sleepy Eye vs. Ada-Borup/Norman County West: Sleepy Eye returns for its third overall appearance. Madi Heiderscheidt and Sarah Ibarra both reached 1,000 career points for the Indians this year. This is the first appearance for the Cougars of Ada-Borup/Norman County West. As Ada-Borup, the team previously made two consecutive and ten overall appearances in the tournament, winning championships in 2008, 2009 and 2015. Ada-Borup lost in the quarterfinals in 2017.

                Class AA
                Byron vs. Sauk Centre: Byron is making its debut appearance in the state tournament. Ayoka Lee, who will play basketball at Kansas State next year, leads the Bears with 28.5 points per game, 16.3 rebounds per game and 114 blocks on the season. Undefeated Sauk Centre, the 2017 runner-up, is making its fourth consecutive and eighth overall tournament appearance. Three players average double-digit scoring for the Mainstreeters: Tori Peschel (13.5 points per game), Kelsey Peschel (13.3), and Maesyn Thiesen (12.4).
                Norwood-Young America vs. Minnehaha Academy, Minneapolis: The Raiders of Norwood-Young America are making their fourth overall tournament appearance. Their last was in 2016. Kali Grimm, who holds the school record for career points and three-point shots made, is closing in on 2,000 career points. This marks the fifth consecutive and 12th overall appearance for Minnehaha Academy, which won a championship in 2010. The Redhawks lost in the quarterfinals in 2017. Mia Curtis leads the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game, while Avery New is the top rebounder with 9.0 per game.
                Mesabi East, Aurora vs. Maranatha Christian Academy, Brooklyn Park: Mesabi East returns to tournament play for the first time since 1998, making their third overall appearance. Hope Howell’s 295 rebounds (9.8 per game) set a team season rebounding record. Ava Hill leads the Giants in scoring at 21.6 points per game. Making a ninth overall and ninth consecutive appearance, Maranatha Christian Academy took fourth place in Class A last year. Jaclyn Jarnot, who averages 15.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, has surpassed 2,000 career points and 700 career assists. The Mustangs won championships in 2011 and 2012.
                Tracy-Milroy-Balaton vs. Roseau: Evelyn Dolan leads the Panthers of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in scoring (17.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.9 rebounds per game). This is the first appearance as Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. Tracy competed three times; Tracy Area was champion in 1992, its only trip to the state tournament; Tracy-Milroy appeared five times and won championships in 1988 and 1996; and Tracy/Milroy/Walnut Grove made an appearance in 1989. The defending champions from Roseau return to the tournament for a fourth consecutive year and sixth time overall.

                Class AAA
                Alexandria Area vs. Robbinsdale Cooper: The Cardinals of Alexandria Area are looking to improve on last year’s fourth-place showing. They are making their second consecutive and ninth overall appearance. If the Cardinals win, it would be their second championship. They won their first in 1997. Kendall Kohler and Macy Hatlestad have both scored 1,000 points for Alexandria Area. The Hawks of Robbinsdale Cooper are making their debut appearance. Aja Wheeler and Kierra Wheeler average 14.0 and 13.7 points per game, respectively, for Robbinsdale Cooper.
                Willmar vs. DeLaSalle, Minneapolis: The Willmar Cardinals are making their second consecutive appearance and seventh overall. They fell in the consolation finals in 2017. Cayle Hovland, who leads the team with 11.2 points per game, has been to state in three events. In addition to basketball, she has also qualified in tennis and track and field. DeLaSalle, which took consolation honors in 2017, returns for its second consecutive and ninth overall appearance. The Islanders won three consecutive championships between 2011 and 2013. DeLaSalle averaged 56.7 points per game this year and their opponents averaged 39.7 against them.
      Mankato West vs. Northfield: The Mankato West Scarlets are making their first tournament appearance. Holly Wiste averages 11.3 points and 3.4 rebound per game for Mankato West. Northfield, which includes students from Arcadia Charter School and EdVisions Off Campus High School, returns for its third appearance. The Raiders made their last appearance in 2010. Grace Touchette has score over 1,300 career points and will end her high school career as Northfield’s all-time leader in assists.
                Grand Rapids vs. Academy of Holy Angels, Richfield: The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks return for their third consecutive appearance and seventh overall. They placed sixth in 2017. Heaven Hamling leads Grand Rapids with 22.4 points per game this season. The Stars of Academy of Holy Angels are making their third consecutive appearance and sixth overall. They are looking to improve on last year’s third-place showing. Academy of Holy Angels won previous title in 1975 (Winter) and 2016. Destinee Oberg, who will play for the University of Arkansas next year, averages 14.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. 
               
                Class AAAA
                Prior Lake vs. Eastview, Apple Valley: Prior Lake is making its fourth appearance, but first since 2003. McKenna Hofschild leads this year’s squad with 28.8 points per game. Eastview is looking to improve on last year’s third-place showing. The Lightning are making their seventh consecutive appearance and their 11th overall. They are in the hunt for their second title, having won their first in 2014. Mariah Alipate, who averages 10.0 points this season, will play basketball at St. Cloud State next year.
                Maple Grove vs. Lakeville North: Maple Grove returns for its fourth appearance, but first since 2011. Autumn Mlinar and Katrina Thies average 15.7 and 15.1 points per game, respectively for the Crimson. Lakeville North is making its third consecutive appearance and eighth overall. The Panthers placed fourth in 2017 and are looking for their second championship. They won their first in 2010. Ke James has had nine double-doubles for the Panthers this season. She averages 10.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
                Forest Lake vs. Hopkins: The Rangers of Forest Lake are making their third appearance. Their last was in 2001. Abigail Groeneweg averages 11.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for Forest Lake. The Hopkins Royals return for their fourth consecutive appearance and 12th overall. They placed second in 2017 and are looking for their seventh title. They won previously in 2004, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. The Royals average 78.3 points per game this year, and their opponents average 52.8 against them.
                Roseville Area vs. Cretin-Derham Hall, St. Paul: Roseville Area, which is making its eighth appearance, returns for the first time since 2007. Jayda Johnston paces this year’s squad with 12.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The Raiders of Cretin-Derham Hall are making their sixth appearance, but first since 2003. They won one previous championship in 1999. The Raiders average 65.2 points per game this year, while holding their opponents to an average of 53.8 points per game.

      2017 State Tournament Recap
      Class A: The Wildcats of Goodhue, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, won their second consecutive and overall title. They defeated top-seeded Mountain Iron-Buhl 73-51 in the title game. Sydney Lodermeier and Mckenzie Ryan each scored 14 points for Goodhue. Ryan was also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The Wildcats started their tournament run with a 68-55 win over GHEC/Truman/Martin Luther. Goodhue then defeated Cromwell-Wright 70-48 in the semifinals. Cromwell-Wright bounced back to claim third-place honors after defeating Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park 78-51. Southwest Minnesota Christian of Edgerton took home the consolation hardware after posting a 79-67 victory over GHEC/Truman/Martin Luther.
      Class AA: The top-seeded Roseau Rams won their first championship after defeating No. 2-seeded Sauk Centre 75-64 in the championship game. Kiley Borowicz paced Roseau with a 20-point performance. The Rams opened the tournament with an 82-64 win over New Richland-H-E-G. In the semifinals, they defeated New London-Spicer 79-57. Watertown-Mayer defeated New London-Spicer 49-48 in the third-place game. In the consolation final, Rochester Lourdes fell to New Richland-H-E-G 73-57.
      Class AAA: In Class AAA, the Orono Spartans won their first title after defeating Winona 65-47. Orono entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. Winona was seeded No. 3. Tori Andrew was the top scorer for the Spartans; she finished the game with 22 points. In the quarterfinals, Orono defeated Willmar 59-45. The Spartans advanced and beat Alexandria Area 50-34 in the semifinals. Academy of Holy Angels of Richfield took home third-place honors after defeating Alexandria Area 74-66. DeLaSalle of Minneapolis needed to two overtimes to defeat Grand Rapids 68-66 in the consolation final.
      Class AAAA: The Elk River Elks earned their first championship after posting a 64-60 victory over top-seeded Hopkins. The Elks, who were the No. 2 seed, were led by Gabi Haack’s 25 points. Elk River started the tournament with a 52-44 quarterfinal win over White Bear Lake Area. In the semifinals, the Elks squeaked by Lakeville North 57-56. Eastview of Apple Valley claimed third-place honors after defeating Lakeville North 68-49. Park Center of Brooklyn Park took the consolation crown after beating Andover 55-45.

MN State Boys’ Hockey Tournament Preview



BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. --- The annual Minnesota State High School League Boys Hockey Tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul with the consolation rounds being played at 3M Arena at Mariucci on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Tournament Preview
Class A
Mankato East/Loyola (16-10-2) vs. No. 2 Mahtomedi (21-6-1) --- Mankato East/Loyola defeated Rochester Lourdes/Dover-Eyota 6-1 in the Section 1A championship game. It is the first state tournament appearance for Mankato East/Loyola since 2006. Junior forward Sam Schultz leads Mankato East/Loyola in points with 23 on five goals and 18 assists. Sophomore forward Matthew Salzie has a team-best 11 goals. Mahtomedi is the Section 4A representative for the third time in the past four seasons. Last season, the Zephyrs were the third seed, but was upset in the quarterfinals by unseeded Northfield.
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (16-11-1) vs. No. 3 Orono (20-7-1) --- This will be the third meeting between the Wright County Conference opponents. In the earlier meetings, Orono posted 10-0 and 7-1 victories, respectively. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato captured the Section 3A crown with a 4-1 victory over Luverne, the defending section champ. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato has qualified for the state tournament for the fourth time, and first since 2016. In 28 games, junior forward  Brandt Peterson has 27 goals and 17 assists. Orono won the Section 2A crown with a 2-1 victory over Breck in overtime. It is the Spartans’ ninth state tournament appearance and first since 2014. Senior forward Jack Suchy leads Orono with 19 goals and 37 assists.
Monticello (19-7-2) vs. No. 1 Hermantown (20-6-2) --- This is a rematch of last season’s Class A championship game that Hermantown won in two overtimes. Monticello won the Section 4A crown with a 4-1 victory over North Branch. Junior forward Troy Dahlheimer leads the Moose with 21 goals and 24 assists in 28 games. Hermantown, the two-time defending Class A champion, needed two overtimes to top Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin for the Section 7A title. Senior center Tyler Watkins leads the high-powered Hawks with 25 goals and 43 assists. Sophomore forward Blake Biondi has chipped in 26 goals and 28 assists.
No. 5 Thief River Falls (16-10-2) vs. No. 4 Alexandria Area (17-10-1) --- Thief River Falls defeated East Grand Forks 4-0 for the Section 8A crown and a 15th trip to the state tournament. That postseason victory avenged two regular-season losses to the Green Wave. Senior forward Aaron Myers has 25 goals and 16 assists for the Prowlers. Alexandria Area defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 3-2 in overtime for the Section 6A crown and a state tournament trip for the first time since 2011. Junior forward Jack Westlund leads the Cardinals with 14 goals and 18 assists in 27 games.

Class AA
Lakeville North (16-10-2) vs. No. 2 Edina (26-2-0) --- Lakeville North edged defending Section 1AA champion and crosstown rival, Lakeville South, 4-3 for a return trip to the state tournament for the first time since the Panthers won the Class AA crown in 2015. Junior forward Spencer Schneider has 25 goals and 20 assists for the Panthers. Edina rolled past Wayzata 8-1 for the Section 2AA crown and a 27th trip to the state tournament. The Hornets’ only two losses this season have been to Minnetonka, the top seed. Edina also had a victory over the Skippers during the Lake Conference schedule. Senior forward Sammy Walker has 28 goals and 30 assists while junior forward Mason Nevers has 21 goals and 34 assists.
St. Michael-Albertville (23-5-0) vs. No. 3 Duluth East (23-2-3) --- St. Michael-Albertville outlasted Moorhead 6-5 for the Section 8AA crown and an inaugural trip to the state tournament. The Knights are on a 12-game winning streak and have six shutouts in that span. Sophomore forward Adam Flammang leads a balanced Knights’ attack with 25 goals and 22 assists. Duluth East needed overtime to get past Andover 3-2 for the Section 7AA crown and a 23rd trip to the state tournament. Senior forward Garrett Worth leads a powerful Trojans’ attack with 42 goals and 22 assists.
Hill-Murray (13-11-4) vs. No. 1 Minnetonka (24-2-2) --- Hill-Murray opened the playoffs with a 9-11-4 record. On the strength of a four-game winning streak, including a 3-1 victory over top-seeded White Bear Lake in the Section 4AA final, the Pioneers have qualified for the state tournament for the 29th time. The Pioneers played Minnetonka during the holiday break and lost 4-2. Junior forward Ben Helgeson leads Hill-Murray with 19 goals and 20 assists. Minnetonka had to survive two overtimes to finally defeat Holy Family, 5-4, for the Section 2AA crown and a sixth trip to the state tournament. The Skippers haven’t lost since an 8-2 setback to Edina on Jan. 25, a span of 10 games. Junior forward Jack Bayless has scored 22 goals and assisted on 28. Sophomore playmaker Bobby Brink has 33 assists to go with 16 goals.
No. 5 Centennial (19-6-3) vs. No. 4 St. Thomas Academy (25-2-1) --- Centennial posted a 6-4 victory over defending section champion Maple Grove to capture the 5AA crown and a fourth state tournament trip. The Cougars last qualified in 2014. Senior forward Lucas McGregor leads the Cougars with 28 goals and 40 assists. St. Thomas Academy won the Section 3AA crown for the third time in the past four seasons with a 4-1 victory over Eastview. Last season, the Cadets won the Class AA consolation final with a 5-0 victory over Wayzata. Senior forwards Payton Matsui (28 goals, 30 assists) and Ray Christy (15 goals, 43 assists) have a team-best 58 points.

2017 State Tournament Recap
Class A --- Top-seeded Hermantown needed overtime in each of its three state tournament games to successfully defend its Class A championship.  The Hawks needed two overtimes and a 4-3 outcome to turn back an upset bid by Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake in the Class A championship game in front of 9,367 at Xcel Energy Center. Senior defensemen Dylan Samberg ended one of the most dramatic Class A tournaments when he fired a slapshot from just inside the blue line, a shot that hooked on the inside of the far post. His game-winner came with 20 seconds remaining in the second extra session. Five minutes earlier, the Hawks (29-1-1) thought they had won the championship, but an apparent goal by junior center Tyler Watkins was disallowed. Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake junior goalie Tyler Klatt made 52 saves, including 17 combined in the two overtime sessions. Senior forward Nick Zwack had a goal and an assist for the Moose (23-7-1). Hermantown was the fifth team all-time to play three overtimes in the same tournament. The Hawks are also the first team to ever win all three overtime games in the same tournament. In the quarterfinals, Hermantown defeated unseeded Luverne 3-2 in a single overtime. St. Cloud Cathedral defeated Northfield 2-1 in the third-place game and Delano topped East Grand Forks 6-3 in the consolation final.
Class AA --- Grand Rapids won a boys hockey state championship for the first time since 1980 following a 6-3 victory over Moorhead in the Class AA title game in front of 19,109 at Xcel Energy Center. Grand Rapids’ previous title came during the single-class format. In the final, it was the first time two schools from northern Minnesota played for a Class AA title since 2007. In that final, Grand Rapids lost to Roseau, 5-1. Grand Rapids, seeded No. 5 to open the tournament, used three upset victories to win the state title for the fourth time. Moorhead was the No. 3 seed. Junior forward Gavin Hain fueled Grand Rapids (23-7-1) with three goals in helping Grand Rapids add titles to ones in 1975, 1976 and 1980. Grand Rapids opened the tournament with a 6-4 victory over No. 4 Maple Grove in the quarterfinals. They followed with a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Eden Prairie. Eden Prairie captured the third-place trophy with a 3-2 victory over Lakeville South in overtime. In the consolation final, St. Thomas Academy raced past Wayzata, 5-0.
