NDSU Volleyball Adds Two for 2014 Season

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State University head volleyball coach Kari Thompson announced on Tuesday, May 6, that McKenzie Burke and Dallas Goettle have been admitted to NDSU and will join the volleyball team in the fall for the 2014 season.

Burke, an outside hitter from Osceola, Wis., and Goettle, a libero from Casselton, N.D., join Jessica Jorgensen, Brianna Rasmusson and Mikaela Purnell in the five-woman 2014 recruiting class for NDSU.

Burke, a 6-foot outside hitter from Osceola (Wis.) HS, was a first-team All-Middle Border Conference performer in her junior and senior seasons as Osceola won conference titles both years. A three-year starter and two-year captain, Burke led Osceola to a regional championship and a runner-up finish at sectionals in 2013. She was also a four-year starter in softball and a three-year starter in basketball, earning second-team all-conference honors in both sports.

Goettle, a 5-6 libero from Central Cass (N.D.) HS, ranks second on the Squirrels’ leaderboard for career digs. She was an all-conference and all-district nominee as a senior in 2013, and a member of the Class B state championship team in 2011. Goettle was named the top defensive player on her club team in 2013. She also played basketball and softball for Central Cass HS, winning a state softball title in 2013 and finishing as the state runner-up in both of those sports during her career.

NDSU finished fifth in The Summit League in 2013 and returns nine players with starting experience this fall.

MN Gophers to Visit Wake Forest in 2014 ACC/B1G Challenge

The University of Minnesota men’s basketball team will travel to face Wake Forest as part of the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, as the full slate of games was announced today by the conferences. The Golden Gophers and the Demon Deacons will square off on Tuesday, December 2 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Game time and television broadcast information will be announced at a later date.

This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back 60 years, with a 3-3 split of the prior matchups. Most recently, the Gophers topped the Deacons, 73-58, in the opening round of the 2006 National Invitation Tournament at Williams Arena.

Prior to that, Wake Forest defeated Minnesota, 85-79, at home in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in 2001. That was the only prior time the teams have met in the annual event. In overall series history, each team has gone 2-0 on its home court, while they split in consecutive years at the 1954 and 1955 Dixie Classic in Raleigh, N.C.

The Gophers are 7-8 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after posting victories in their past three matchups. The ACC leads the series 10-3-2 after the 2012 and 2013 events ended in a 6-6 tie. This year’s challenge, newly expanded to 14 games featuring every conference school, will feature Big Ten newcomers Maryland and Rutgers along with new ACC member Louisville.

Wake Forest will host the Maroon and Gold in their first season under new head coach Danny Manning. The Demon Deacons return four starters and nine letterwinners from their 2013-14 squad.

Coming off the 2014 NIT championship and a school-record 25 wins, the Gophers will return four starters and eight letterwinners mixed with six newcomers as they take the court for the second year under head coach Richard Pitino.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN.

UMC's Manusos Named to All-NSIC Gold Glove Team

CROOKSTON, Minn.- University of Minnesota Crookston softball player Ashley Manusos (Sr., OF, Spring Grove, Ill./Sports and Rec Management) was named to the Gold Glove team as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) named their All-Conference teams for the 2014 season.

Manusos was honored as one of the best defensive players in the conference, a much deserved honor for the center field who was consistently made strong defensive play after strong defensive play in the outfield over the last two years. Manusos had a game-saving rob of a home run in a win over St. Cloud State University earlier this season. The senior held a .984 fielding percentage on the season with just one error.

Minnesota State University, Mankato catcher Lindsay Erickson was named the NSIC Player of the Year. The NSIC Pitcher of the Year and NSIC Freshman of the Year was Coley Ries of Minnesota State. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year was Winona State University Pitcher Hanna Lythberg, while the NSIC Coach of the Year was Minnesota State’s Lori Meyer. Winona State led all teams with four players on the All-NSIC First Team.

UMC Baseball Adds Four Signees

CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team announced the addition of four players to National Letters of Intent. The Golden Eagles signed a pair of junior college product in Adam Sellner (P, 5-11 175, Sleepy Eye, Minn./Riverland C.C.) and Lucas Thoma (P, 5-11 200, Little Falls, Minn./Itasca C.C.), along with high school products Matt Nelson (UT, 6-3 215, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South H.S.) and Riley Thompson (OF/P, 6-1 200, Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna H.S.).

The signings of Sellner, Thoma, Nelson and Thompson bring the total to six players UMC has signed during the Signing Period including local products Brayden Larson (P/C, 6-0 195, Middle River, Minn./Greenbush/Middle River H.S.) and Cody Magsam (IF, 5-10 150, Crookston, Minn./Fisher H.S.).

“I’m very excited that we have signed these four individuals to be a part of the University of Minnesota Crookston and its baseball program,” said Head Coach Chris Vito. “All four are good students that will be welcome additions to our team and the University.”

Prior to UMC: Currently competes at Riverland Community College in Austin, Minn...Appeared in 20 games for the Blue Devils as a freshman, recording a .235 batting average with four RBI’s...Was 4-of-4 on stolen base attempts...As a pitcher, started six games with 38 innings pitched with a record of 3-2 and 2.84 ERA with 41 strikeouts and four complete games...As a sophomore, Sellner has logged 17 innings pitched with two starts...He currently has a 3.18 ERA with 13 strikeouts...At the plate, Sellner is hitting .311 with 15 runs scored, 12 RBI’s, two doubles and two triples...Prior to Riverland C.C., Sellner attended Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s H.S...He played football, basketball and baseball during his prep career...Was an All-Tomahawk Conference pick from 2010-12...Sellner was named the All-Journal Baseball Player of the Year by the New Ulm Journal...Was an All-State selection in 2011 and 2012.

Personal: Son of Loran and Heidi Sellner...Born July 5, 1993...Plans to major in agricultural systems management with an emphasis in farm and ranch management.

“Adam is a solid pitcher with two years of college experinence under his belt in an excellent prgrm at Riverlnd Community College,” Vito said. “Prior to that he played at good high school program in Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. We needed to add depth to our pitching staff with a lot of losses in our senior class. Adam will immediately help to fill that gap.”

Prior to UMC: Was a 2013 National Under Armour Team participant...Hit .386 for his American Legion team in 2013, leading the team in doubles and home runs...Was a Big 9 All-Conference Honorable Mention pick at Owatonna H.S. in 2013...Hit .300 and led the team with five doubles and 14 RBI’s during the 2013 season.

Prior to UMC: Competes for the Lakeville South baseball team and the Elko Club baseball team for Senior Babe Ruth and St. Paul Saints development team..Also wrestled for Lakeville South for three years placing fifth in sections...Batted .400 with 39 RBI’s for Elko in Senior Babe Ruth and hit .579 with 12 RBI’s and five runs scored for St. Paul Saints development team.

Personal: Son of Dan and Andrea Nelson...Born July 14, 1996...Plans to major in sports and rec management.

“Matt Nelson is another solid student-athlete who brings versatility to play some different positions for us,” Vito said. “This will make him a valuable contributor over his four years here.”

The six new signees join a UMC squad that is looking to replace eight seniors. The Golden Eagles currently have 12 players slated to return for the 2015 season led by returning starters Jesse Jennings (OF, Robbinsdale, Minn.), Ryan Haggstrom (C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn.), Patrick Higgins (OF, Eagan, Minn.), Colton Haight (C, Buffalo, Minn.), Marcus Campbell (OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis.), Travis Magdzas (OF, Duluth, Minn.) and Trevor Buttermore (P/3B, North St. Paul, Minn.) along with pitchers Cody Pamperin (Shakopee, Minn.) and Cayden Barta (Fargo, N.D.) who have played a key role out of the bullpen and Brandon Kresl (1B, Crookston, Minn.) who has been limited by an injury but has contributed as a designated hitter.

Also slated to return are two players who redshirted the 2014 season in Wyatt Huso (P, Eagan, Minn.) and Zach Frazier (C/1B/OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.).

The student-athletes listed today as having signed National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission to play at University of Minnesota Crookston have been verified by the UMC Compliance Office once they sign the National Letter of Intent and financial aid agreement or once the student-athlete has accepted an Offer of Admission from UMC.

UMC Athletics Awards Distinguished Honors for 2013-14 Season

CROOKSTON, Minn.- The University of Minnesota Crookston athletic department recognized their distinguished award recipients for the 2013-14 season during the University’s award banquet Thur., April 24. UMC men’s golfer Matt McClure (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn./Natural Resources) was selected as the Male Outstanding Athlete of the Year, while women’s basketball player Katrina Moenkedick (So., Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) was the Female Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

In addition, UMC awarded baseball player Jesse Jennings (Jr., Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice) Male Student-Athlete of the Year and women’s golfer Katie Sheetz (So., Grand Rapids, Minn./Biology) Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Tomas Parker (Jr., F/C, Pequot Lakes, Minn./Management) earned the Justin Knebel Memorial Award.

The Athlete of the Year award honors someone who has both outstanding athletic and academic achievements and displays exemplary citizenship and is a role model for their respective program.

McClure had an outstanding season for the UMC men’s golf team, leading the squad with a 77.2 average. McClure charted four top-10 finishes on the 2013-14 season including finishing tied for seventh at the NSIC Men’s Golf Championship. His placing at the Championship culminated a three-week stretch of top-1o finishes, including finishing eighth at the Quarry Oaks Collegiate in Ashland, Neb., and finishing tied for eighth at the Upper Iowa Spring Invite in Columbus, Neb. McClure accomplished his strong Spring season after missing the first tournament due to a death in the family.

In the fall, McClure charted one top-10 finish, placing in a tie for ninth at the Erv Kaiser Invitational, which pitted him against several NCAA Division I golfers.

Moenkedick averaged 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team. The sophomore was the only underclassmen who earned placement on the All-NSIC first or second teams as she picked up All-NSIC Second Team accoloades. Moenkedick notched six double-doubles on the season and had seven games over 20 points. The sophomore tallied a career-high 30 points against Upper Iowa University Jan. 3. She added 11 boards to complete the double-double in that game.

The Student-Athlete of the Year Award honors someone with a 3.2 GPA or higher, who has letter the same sport for two years with outstanding athletic and academic achievements. This person also displays exemplary citizenship and is a role model for their respective program.

Jennings, the Male Student-Athlete of the Year, maintains a 3.91 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) in Criminal Justice. He has had three-straight 4.0 semesters. Jennings a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and is an SOS leader. He is also a former Regents Representative for the UMC Student Association (CSA). He serves as a mentor in the baseball program and is well respected by all of his teammates. He was named UMC Teambacker Student-Athlete of the Week once for his performance in the classroom. He is a starter for the team as an outfielder.

Sheetz, the Female Student-Athlete of the Year, had a 3.949 GPA in Biology. She is a member of Alpha Lamba Delta, the National Society of Leadership and Success, SAAC and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She volunteers at the food bank every week. On the course, Sheetz led the team in scoring average and won the Bemidji State Fall Invite and the Dual In The Desert.

Parker, the Justin Knebel Memorial Award recipient, is a junior on the men’s basketball team. The recipient of the award is somebody that exlempifies the things Justin did, being the ultimate team player who works hard on the court and in the classroom and excels both athletically and academically. Parker is a management major at UMC.

In addition, four student-athletes who earned the NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award were recognized. These athletes achieved a GPA of 3.75 of higher and are exhausting their eligibility or are on track to graduate. Football players Andrew Steinfeldt (Green Bay, Wis./Health Science) and Joshua Perea (Pico Rivera, Calif./Health Science) and volleyball players Chelsea Wiesner (Rochester, Minn./Health Science) and Alyssa Schneider (Racine, Wis./Early Childhood Education) all earned the honor.

Finally, UMC honored their All-Academic team, which included 67 individuals, an all-time high. To earn UMC All-Academic, an athlete had to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be at least a sophome in academic standing. The full listing of the UMC All-Academic Team is listed below.
