MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL –
The WNBA today named Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen its Western
Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, May 26 through
Sunday, June 1. The Player of the Week award is Whalen's first of the
season and sixth of her career. She is also the second consecutive Lynx
player to win Player of the Week, joining Maya Moore who won the first
Player of the Week of the season.
Whalen
began her week with a season-high 22 points, including a key jumper in
the final minutes, in a Memorial Day victory against the Chicago Sky.
The point guard also dished out a team-leading four assists as the Lynx
handed the Sky their first loss of the season. Whalen continued her
strong play against San Antonio at Target Center on May 30, contributing
19 points, pulling down five rebounds and handing out three assists in a
Lynx victory. That game also marked Whalen's second consecutive game
without committing a turnover. The University of Minnesota product
capped off her week with a double-double at San Antonio, notching 14
points and 10 assists in an 87-79 win that kept Minnesota unbeaten with a
7-0 record. The double-double was her first of the season and ninth in a
Lynx uniform.
This season Whalen
ranks 5th in the WNBA in assists (5.4 apg), 10th in scoring (16.3 ppg),
2nd among point guards in rebounding (4.1 rpg) and 6th in
assist-to-turnover ratio (3.17-to-1). Whalen has scored in double
figures in all seven games this season, including two games of 20+
points.
Indiana's Briann January was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
After
back-to-back victories against the San Antonio Stars over the weekend,
the Lynx lead the WNBA with a 7-0 record and have matched the
fourth-best unbeaten start to a season in WNBA history.
The
Lynx continue their four game road swing on Friday, June 6 at Key Arena
against the Seattle Storm. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. CDT and
the game can be seen on NBA TV and heard on BOB 106.1 FM.
