GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Director of Athletics
Brian Faison and UND Letterwinners Association President Karen Braaten
announced today the UND Letterwinners Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013.
Jenny Crouse (Basketball, 1995-99), Greg Johnson (Hockey, 1989-93) and Carter Rogalla(Baseball, 1994-98) will be inducted as
individuals, while the 1988-89 men’s swimming & diving team and the 1991
women’s cross country team will be inducted in the team category.
Additionally,
former UND hockey standout and current University of Minnesota Duluth head
coachScott Sandelin (1982-86) will receive
the Tom Clifford Award, while longtime statistician Jim Schothorst will receive the Honorary Letterwinner Award.
“What
an incredible class of Hall of Fame honorees we have this year, representing
five different sports,” said Braaten, who lettered in tennis at UND in 1971 and
1972. “All of our athletic inductees had outstanding athletics records while at
UND and have continued their success beyond their collegiate years. A statistician
since 1979, Jim Schothorst has volunteered countless hours to our football and
basketball programs and is most deserving of his award.”
The
39th annual Athletics Hall of
Fame event will take place with a luncheon and induction ceremony on Sept. 14 prior
to UND's Big Sky Conference football game against Montana. The Class of 2013
will also be recognized during halftime of the football game.
This
year's three inductees bring the total number of individuals in UND's
Letterwinners Athletics Hall of Fame to 237, while the two team inductees are
the 33rd and 34th to be recognized.

Jenny Crouse (Basketball, 1995-99): Led North Dakota to three consecutive NCAA Division II championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999 … Two-time NCAA DII Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player (1998, 1999) … A first-team All-American as a senior and junior and a third-team All-American as a freshman … A two-time NCAA DII National Player of the Year (1997-98, 1998-99) … Four-time All-North Central Conference selection and the 1995-96 NCC Freshman of the Year … Remains UND’s all-time leader in career points (2,284), scoring average (18.0 ppg), rebounds (1,145), field goals made (924), field goals attempted (1,474), field goal percentage (.627), free throw attempts (588) and blocked shots (494) … Still holds single-season school records for field goal percentage (.684 in 1997-98) and blocked shots (152 in 1998-99) … Set UND’s freshman scoring record with 558 points in 1995-96, a record that still stands … Blocked a school-record 14 shots in a Feb. 8, 1997, win vs. St. Cloud State, and added 19 points and 12 rebounds for the first recorded triple-double in UND women’s basketball history … UND went 116-12 (.906) during her four years, including back-to-back 31-1 seasons in 1997-98 and 1999-99 … Named to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball 25th Anniversary Team in 2006 … Originally from Freeport, Ill.

Greg Johnson (Hockey, 1989-93): UND’s all-time scoring leader with 272 career
points in 155 games, including a WCHA-record 198 assists … The only three-time
Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist (1991, 1992, 1993) in UND history … A
three-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 1991 and 1993 and
second-team honors in 1992 … Named to three straight All-WCHA First Teams
(1991-93) … Two-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection … Following college,
spent two seasons with Canadian National Team … Won a gold medal with Canada at
the 1991 World Junior Championship … Also represented Canada at the 1994 Winter
Olympics … Went on to enjoy a 12-year National Hockey League career with
Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Nashville … Served as team captain in
Nashville for his final three seasons in the NHL … Finished his NHL career with
369 points (145 goals, 224 assists) in 785 games … Was originally drafted by
Philadelphia in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1989 draft … Brothers Corey (1992-96) and Ryan
(1994-96) also played at UND … Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Carter Rogalla (Baseball, 1994-98): Graduated in 1998 as UND’s all-time leader in at-bats (586), runs scored (202), hits (201), doubles (37), triples (9), home runs (33), runs batted in (156), total bases (352) and walks (106) … Remains the school’s career leader in runs scored and walks … Ranks second all-time at UND with 63 career stolen bases … A two-time all-region selection (1996, 1998) … Also twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors (1997, 1998) … Named North Central Conference co-Player of the Year in 1998 … Two-time All-NCC First Team selection … Holds UND’s single-season records for RBI (65) and runs scored (64) … Also set UND single-season records for hits (68), doubles (15), triples (4), home runs (20) and total bases (143), all of which have since been broken … Helped lead UND to North Central Conference runner-up finishes in 1995 and 1998 … Originally from Thief River Falls, Minn.

1988-89 Men’s Swimming & Diving Team: Placed eighth at 1989
NCAA Division II Championship … Four individuals and four relay teams earned
NCAA DII All-America honors at the national meet … Eleven individual
performances from the 1988-89 season remain in UND’s all-time top-10 times list
… Rollie Bottleberghe’s 1-meter diving score of 313.20 points remains the
longest-standing school record in men’s swimming and diving history … Three
swimmers earned CSCA All-Academic honors (Mike Ewing, Mike Olson, Wade Ritter)
… Won fourth of 11 consecutive North Central Conference titles … Mike Haase was
named NCC Swimmer of the Year and Chad Anderson was named NCC Diver of the Year
… Four members of the team (Ewing, Haase, Ritter, head coach Mike Stromberg)
have been inducted into the UND Athletics Letterwinners Association Hall of
Fame.
1991 Women’s Cross Country Team: UND’s first women’s
cross country team to qualify for the NCAA DII Championship, where it placed
fifth … Two runners (Steph Bruening, Sheila Pexsa) were named DII
All-Americans, the first in program history … Both were also named the first
CCCA DII All-Academic honorees in program history … Bruening was also named a
CoSIDA DII Academic All-American … Bruening and Louise Ronnerman were named
all-region and All-North Central Conference … Head coach Dick Clay was named
North Central Region Coach of the Year … Placed third at the North Central
Region Championship … Ronnerman and Bruening are members of the UND Athletics
Letterwinners Association Hall of Fame as individuals.

Tom Clifford Award was established to honor former UND President Thomas J.
Clifford and his long-time support of UND Athletics. The award recognizes UND
alumni who serve with distinction as athletic coaches at the high school or
college levels.

Letterwinners Association Honorary Award is given upon official action by the
club's Executive Committee to persons who, in the opinion of the committee,
