(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a 3-1 record at the Lynn University Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. The Golden Eagles placed two players on the all-tournament squad. Freshman outside hitter Brittany Looker (OH, 5-10, Fr., Rochester, Minn.) amassed a tournament-high 63 kills while averaging just under five kills per set. Libero Chelsea Wiesner (DS, 5-8, So., Rochester, Minn.) helped Crookston to a 3-1 record in the tournament and her 47 digs earned her a place on the all-tournament team as well.
Minnesota, Crookston (3-1, 0-0 NSIC)- Looker made her Golden Eagle Volleyball debut in grand fashion last weekend at the Lynn University Invite in Boca Raton, Fla. Looker helped lead Minnesota, Crookston to a 3-1 tournament record and was a leader on the Golden Eagle offense. She led all attackers with 63 kills in 13 sets for a 4.85 kill/set average. She finished with a solid .319 attack percentage and was second on the team with six service aces. Defensively she was tied for third on the team with 21 digs and finished third on the team with nine total blocks on the weekend. Following weekend play, Looker was named to the All-Tournament team. Setter Kelsey Matykowski (S, 5-7, Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished the weekend with 114 assists, good for an 8.77 assists/set average. She added a team-high eight service aces and tallied 23 defensive digs.
The Golden Eagles will play NSIC teams in non-conference action. On Friday, September 9, UMC plays Augustana College (2-2) at 10:30 a.m. and Northern State University (2-2) at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 10, the Golden Eagles play Minot State University at 12:30 p.m. and St. Cloud State University (2-2) at 5:30 p.m. All matches will be held at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on the MSU Moorhead campus.
