Richard Haley Breaks UMC 1,000 Yard Rushing Record
(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Athletic Department announced today that junior, running back, Richard Haley (RB, 6-0, 205, Jr., Detroit, Mich.) broke the Golden Eagle 1,000 yard rushing record against Upper Iowa University on Saturday, October 8, 2011.
Haley, a transfer from Grand Rapids Community College, has played in just six games as a Golden Eagle. In that time, he has rushed 178 times and amassed 1,026 yards breaking the old record held by teammate Keith McBride (RB, 5-11, 195, Jr., Lodi, Wis.) who accomplished the 1,000 yard feat in 12 games for Minnesota, Crookston. Haley now has his sights set on the all-time season rushing record of 1,549 yards held by R.J. Rollins recorded in 2004. Rollins also holds the all-time UMC career rushing record of 3,073 yards (2002-2005).
“As coaches we are always very proud to see our athletes accomplish goals. Richard is a tremendous talent and we are very excited for him,” says Head Coach Chuck Moller. “We would also like to congratulate the offensive line and skill athletes who block for him to make this accomplishment possible.”
Haley currently leads the NSIC in rushing and is 409 yards ahead of his next closest competition. He is averaging 5.8 yards/rush and 171 yards/game, almost 70 yards/game above the next closest rusher. Last week he was ranked second in all of NCAA Division II just 3.4 yards behind the nation’s top rusher.
The Golden Eagle Sports Information Department is currently researching to see how many times, if at all, this mark has been reached this quickly in the NSIC.
